So 10% of Americans are alcohols? Yeah right. Seriously dubious data there. Sounds like the kind of crap the Independent would spew onto a page.

    Yes, I do.

My urine is normally very clear so I generally drink enough.

I don't really like the term alcoholic but anyway.

I read an article recently that suggested approximately 5% of Caucasians are pre-disposed to alcoholism.

In the US, depending where you go, there are different levels of what is considered "heavy drinking". What state was that story compiled in?

Utah is uber strict, for one.

    According to the article:

"30% of Americans dont drink at all"

"Another 30% drink less than 1 drink per week".

Ok. So another 40% drink more than one drink a week.

    And?

    Americans can't drink anyway :P

This kind of thing is akin to the bogus rape stats we were discussing in the other thread a few days ago - alarmist propaganda which achieves nothing other than to make people roll their eyes and not take the issue seriously. Genuine alcoholism is a hideous beast to deal with and destroys people's lives, but having a few too many from time to time is not the same thing as having a physical dependancy.

Simples, if you drink everyday or every 2nd day, thats alcoholism.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,889 ✭✭✭✭The Moldy Gowl

10% drink 74 drinks in the week. They do in their bollox

It's a rather simplistic, not to mention unquantified, definition of alcoholism.

It's possibly 74 buds which is only equivalent to about 30 real beers.

There is nothing sweeter than coming home from work, making dinner, sitting down, having a can or 2.

It's when you get a dependence on it. When you start to hide your drinking, when it starts to affect your life.

An alcoholic means you are dependent on alcohol to function.

Yes, you can be a 'functioning alcoholic' but the term alcoholic remains. A glass of wine or a beer per night /every other night (that's a drink, right?) does not constitute alcoholism, very few people on that level will be dependent on the liquor to function.

I didn't make the rules that govern alcoholism btw.

Anncoates hasn't stated what quantity is but Gow Rex has which is a couple a cans a day which is fine. What I meant by my post is getting drunk\tipsy every day or 2nd day.

It really depends how it affects your life.

If you have a family and children or if you are single

You didn't say that initially though.

To be fair, somebody could still be getting tipsy (as in 2 or 3 drinks) every second night and not be alcoholic. The proof of the pudding would be if they had to stop doing it for any reason (work, family, health) and could not.

Some alcoholics don't drink every day. Some people that drink everyday aren't alcoholics and would have no problems stopping. A doctor wouldn't diagnose you as an alcoholic just because you have one drink a day or every other day.

Sorry, didn't see this post before I replied. You didn't say that originally, just that drinking every day means you are an alcoholic. There is still more to it than getting tipsy or drunk a few times a week. It's a physical and psychological disorder.

Most people on boards.ie have no idea what an alcoholic is like to live with. I know one that has called an ambulance about 20 times in the last year so he can be taken to be "dried out". Many close relatives won't even speak to him anymore. He has no job. I've seem him so drunk it was frightening, I wasn't sure hed survive it.

What you say is definitely true in many cases, but not all cases are the same. There are definitely "functional alcoholics" as well. It's still majorly unhealthy and harmful to relationships, but all alcoholics aren't falling all over themselves and losing their jobs.

    There's alcoholism and then there's having a drinking problem...according to a psychologist I know.

There's a high percentage of both in Ireland

The article is the washington post, thats DC not the west coast state, but the source is from a Book by Duke University professor, thats based in North Carolina. im not sure why any of that should matter, but i guess trying to compare the results to ireland is why this thread was created?

In the US, every state controls its own taxes on alcohol, the point of the book, is to try and change that. They are looking to promote a national policy to drive down consumption, very similar to what ye do here in ireland, shock horror!

here is a good map, of different tax rates on alcohol, by state. cross border alcohol buying state to state and even county by county is a huge practice in the US.

In the States too. Everyone is trying to forget how screwed up this world is that we live in. Drown the sorrows away, but that only causes more turmoil in life.

I would be more likely to say, how much alcohol are you drinking every day/2nd day etc, I mean I would have a glass or maybe 2 of wine every 2nd day or 3rd, Im by no means drunk after them and not even tipsy - just relaxed

I think yeah, if your getting out of your mind drunk every day or every 2nd day then yeah you might have a problem there, but its all about the quantity your having :)

I have 3 to 5 bottles of beer every day. But I'm not an alcoholic - alcoholics go to meetings!

It's a bit different here though...high functioning alcoholics go un-noticed but the hardcore alcoholics tend to be less accepted than back home, from what I've seen. Showing up to work hungover is taboo.

OK, that's very interesting. Yeah, every area has it's own unique culture. I actually have family over there(through marriage) and alcoholism has caused great damage in there immediate family, even death. So I definitely know that type of alcoholism that you're talking about. It's sad.
