I played chicken with Sky and Sky won. So now need a TV (still working with old, huge TV here).

This one seems a good price, but will it be OK here to get Irish channels and whatever else goes with them?

Edited to say because I don't have the number of required posts I can't post a link, but if anyone would have a look on tesco.com at the ISIS 39227 39 inch full hd 1080p led tv with freeview 488-9668, I would be very grateful

    Thanks

It says "Built-in Freeview HD No", so I would not take it as the latest generation and so it may not do Saorview.
    I wouldn't.

You can, of course, buy a Saorview box and plug it into your old TV. At this stage people will start to have spare ones as they buy new sets.

But you still have the dish, so could buy a Freesat branded box and plug your cable(s) into that and you'll get all the free to air satellite channels.

Thank you both for your replies. My mother has a brand new spare saorview box but the remote is broken. I half halfheartedly tried to get a replacement remote a good while back, must look into it again.

Am showing my ignorance now, but would that mean I'd get RTE1, TV3 etc?

No it wouldn't but you could get them using a cheapo Saorview box as Ardmacha mentioned.

If you have a box already, maybe a OneForAll remote might work it? What brand is it, you can usually get replacement remotes out there.

be patient sky will ring you back, it takes 31 days to cancel and when they do you can play hard ball.

However if they dont and you have a good signal from your terresstial aerial you could buy a combo box ie saorview and satellite for all the free uk stuff but no digital saorview text.

quite a few boxes but I like edision. others on here will know more. cost about 150 euro.

Have a look at www.genuinecopies.tv. They have remotes for every type of box/tv/vcr. And service is very good.

Saorview approved combis will have teletext: there are 6 combis on the approved list.

With the cheap & cheerful combis, what you should really draw attention to is the lack of a proper EPG on the satellite channels, unlike Freesat (or some of the more 'customisable' combis). No Freesat combis though.

...... and the lack of a monthly Sky bill.

Get a Freesat branded box like a Humax. If you had Sky plus, then get a HDR version, otherwise the standard one is much cheaper. Get a Saorview compatible TV as well and you will not look back and wonder why you did not do it years ago.
