Hi. I'm just wondering if hearing aids would come under the exceptional needs payment from social welfare? I'm currently getting illness benefit but there's no way I could afford the whole cost of hearing aids that were recommended to me. I asked about going through medical card but the audiologist said it would take 2-3 years and that even at that they wouldn't be suitable for me as I'm not deaf, I 'just' have a hearing loss of ~30%. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Exceptional needs payments are discretionary payments, you will need to contact your local CWO and ask.

We can tend to think people involved with health have our best interests uppermost but remember they are businesses. Would recommend calling into your nearest Citizens Information office and checking out exactly what your entitlements are for hearing test and hearing aid.
