Had the misfortune of hitting a large granite rock today which pretty much made mince meat of my 8iron. It happened while playing an open at a course I play 3/4 times a year. I played a shot from a fairway bunker but as soon as I made contact with the sand there was a loud smack..the ball flew into the air only 15 yards away..i laughed thinking I topped the ball..which is allowed once or twice a year!!.. So off I took to play again with the same iron..but when i looked down the shaft I see big chunk out of my iron..and the head itself is also bent out of shape. So I walk back to the bunker and brush away the sand and theres a lump of solid granite just below the surface. Now I made full contact with the stuff. In fairness I cant be the only person to have hit this over the years. Where do I stand in thus situation? I did report it after the round and showed photo,s from the bunker.

It's 100% their fault, so sue them, BTW I hope you finished raking the bunker after gathering your evidence.

I think your GUI insurance will cover it, worth asking either way.

I don't see a problem highlighting the problem to the club, as long as it was done in the correct way, it may stop any future broken clubs which is the benefit to everyone.

I'd be furious in that situation, clubs are expensive and I take good care of mine and you certainly don't expect to hit hidden boulders damaging and breaking clubs in bunkers. Sure they're a hazard but they're a man made hazard so not like hitting from a drain or from heavy rough under trees where such an outcome would be more of a measured risk. That said I'm not sure what, if any, recourse you'd have with the club and claiming from your GolfSure insurance is probably the only option if you can obtain a replacement.
Definitely a good idea however to have reported it to the club. How did they respond or what was the outcome. Guess you can't really do anything until they investigate and get back to you on it.

Well i exposed the rock in the bunker for others to see..the lads in the pro shop were very helpful but understood there was little they could do with the iron. They did attempt to gring out the chip but it just too big. The head need replacement and possibly the shaft, you just dont know until the head is removed. They were somewhat surprised by the stone in the bunker but no,one rushed out to look where the problem occured which i was kind of expecting. I was ready to jump in a buggy and fly down to the spot just to exonerate myself from any blame. But to be fair they took my details and said they.ll see what they can do. What can they do other than dig the rock out..ill be checking to see if they do next time i play the course. I.ll get on to the insurance crowd tomorrow and see what happens.

Well in addition to digging out the rock the ideal resolution would be for the pro shop to source you a replacement funded for by the club but not sure how likely that would be. It certainly would be a great gesture and cement your continued custom along with ensuring positive publicity.

I know it must be frustrating, a good club ruined and all that.
But the first thing I thought of when reading the OP was, how the hell did you not hurt yourself doing it? Hitting solid rock that hard with an 8-iron, you're lucky you didn't end up with an injury.

What type of irons are they?

That doesn't sound right, on what grounds? It is because the proshop tried to grind out the chip and thus attempted a repair?

The GolfSure policy (link: http://www.willis.ie/Home/GetAssetByName?name=GolfsurePPolicyROI) confirms that damage is covered but page 3 in the exclusions states:
"2. Damage to property as a result of its undergoing any process of repairing, restoring or dyeing."
but in your case the attempted repair didn't contribute to the damage.

There is an excess of €50 I think on the policy so perhaps the club is valued at less than that and this is why the claim is not covered?

Yeh..a few people have asked the same question. I basically hit the top of the stone which was smooth as opposed to an edge. The club bounced up instead of halting. They,re callaway razr x..

I thought id be covered alright..but I called the head of finances in my own club who said I was covered for theft only. But what happens if a car runs over your bag in the car park or something.

Is it a Golfsure policy? If so then All Risks (not just theft) should be covered, €50 excess.

Get back on to him, many people that think they understand insurance policies really don't (cf Greebo :-P )

??? One club is damaged, so why would the insurance replace your set?

Well the club is no longer in production. I think they were on the market in 2011. Its unlikely im goin to find the same club in a shop anytime soon and I wouldn,t be keen on throwing an 8 iron in from another set. Thats just me..maybe they.ll accomodate me,maybe not.
