    Hi there,
just wondering on what the feeling is on appropriate speed when commuting to Dublin city centre. I normally slow down to about 25-30kph just in case I get a pedestrian across my path or a door opening in front of me. This morning I got shouted at by some guy for "going to slow" in a red 3-4ft cycle lane beside a row of stopped traffic.
What's the general opinion? Apart from I need a new bike?

I think going too slow refers to how fast you pull away from stops rather than general speed. If you're doing 25-30, it should be easy enough for someone to overtake.

If its none of the above, they must be tossbags and should be ignored and dropped in a commuter race ;)

Go at the speed your most comfortable with. If 25 - 30 is what your happy with then leave it at that.

As for the guy that told you your going to slow. Ignore him!

Never gauge what is an appropriate speed by the opinion of someone shouting at you. If you are uncomfortable at a particular speed then that speed is too fast for you.

Let that guy enjoy a door at high speeds. Slowing down next to stationary traffic is the right move IMO

I cycle at 30kph and above in the city centre, often moving with the motorised traffic. Its important however to be very aware of surroundings and be assertive - I keep myself in the middle (or even right side) of the lane as often as possible due to pedestrians, left turning cars, taxis, opening doors etc.

I see it all the time commuting in the city, guys blasting down the inside of slow or stopped traffic, weaving around other cyclists. It's only a matter of time before they get doored or t-boned.

Ignore the shouter, give him some space to get past (provided it's safe for you) and take solace in the fact that he's a moron.

Go at the speed your comfortable with and be safe.

I find these lads who are shouting at every car and minor traffic infraction hilarious. Their so stressed out for nothing and anything sets them off.
