    Hi

I have a NAS where I store all my media and it runs Plex fine for streaming but for any transcoding it's at 100% and bufffering all the time. I was looking at one of these from China but then I though maybe I could build something just as cheap but better??

Would this build below (total of about €240) or in the link above (total of about €240 + maybe customs) be suitable for Plex Transcoding?

    HV20G213DE Intel Pentium G2130 Box, LGA1155 57,98 €
    HV1135RCDE ASRock H61MV-ITX, Sockel 1155, ITX 46,19 €
    HV20CO97DE 2GB Corsair XMS3 PC3-10667U CL9 24,92 €
    HV203I74DE IN WIN BM639 inkl. 160W PSU Mini-Tower - silber 60,48 €
    HV12SM86DE Seagate Momentus Spinpoint M8 160GB, SATA II 36,71 €

    Thanks for your help

Did you build a plex server in the end? I'm thinking of building a box to do plex (with transcoding) + torrents + network backups. Not sure what spec I need for transcoding, but if it warrants an i5 then it could also be a secondary gaming rig for the living room.

I did build it in the finish but the components have changed quite a bit (I got them all on adverts second hand for €100 so its pretty budget!!) and you can see here that it doesn't actually work yet!!! I'm waiting on a GPU to be delivered so hopefully it will work then and I will get back to you with results.

The CPU has a benchmark of >4000 and Plex recommends >2000 minimum per transcode so in theory it should be able to transcode two streams at the same time but I'll be happy with just one at the time.

So I finished this build in the end and the parts I used were:

    CPU - Intel Pentium G3258 - New
MOBO - ASUS A81 Micro ATX - New
    MEMORY - 2 x 2GB RAM DDR - Second Hand
    HDD - WD Scorpio 160GB 7200 3.5" - Second Hand
CASE - Antec NSK1380 Case - Second Hand
    Total - €145

Delighted with it. Transcodes 3 x 720p streams to phones and tablets over bad internet connection without skipping a beat. Will do 2 x 1080p streams also no problem and may do more, I haven't tried it yet but all I will ever use is one direct stream to the main TV and another transcoding stream to a tablet and it does this without issue.

The htpc is sitting beside my NAS in the attic and is running Crashplan backup, google music, teamviewer, ftp server and Plex without a bother. I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 8gb for Crashplan as it requires a bit of ram but other than that I would highly recommend the G3258 for plex transcoding.
