Bottom left button, something to do with the windscreen but no idea what. The one to the right of it is folding mirrors. It would seem to imply some form of window heating maybe, but it doesn't seem to do anything in particular when turned on

05 Legacy, no manual came with it

    Windshield Wiper De-icer Switch ????
I know some Subaru's came with a Wiper De-cer option, not sure if this is the switch for it though.
If you have the de-icers you should see a fairly thick brown heater element at the bottom of the windscreen.

    http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/11775/pdf/ownerManual/011775_2005_Legacy/MSA5M0504A_11.pdf

scroll down to page 56 and there it is.
This is also the complete owners manual so might come in handy.

    Windshield Wiper De-Icer

De-ices the windshield wiper blades, bit useless TBH

Search "subaru owners manuals", they're all on subaru's website.

    Get the manual from here.

According to this it is the windshield wiper deicer - this is a heater that heats a small section at the base of the windscreen where the wipers rest.

I've had it on and no noticeable effect. A little red light comes on on the switch.

Thanks. I'll leave it on for 5 mins I guess and see if the window bottom warms. no noticeable brown element visible though.

Element can be hidden in the "black bit". Dunno would you notice it working without frost.

Does the car have any tell tale signs of a windscreen replacement - wonky fitted rubbers, rubbers flying off when driving faster than walking, wooshing air around screen? "bodge it and run windscreen company" disc holder stuck to inside? If so the replacement may not have the elements.

Has the car got an ammeter fitted? if so see if it takes any current when on, if no ammeter borrow a multimeter from a sparks and put it into series with the battery and see if it takes current when switched on, if it isn't taking current then it's not working despite the red light.

I have never seen a normal car with an ammeter. Maybe some cars with intelligent battery stuff have some readout somewhere.

Legacy that year wont have intelligent battery but probably has "smart alternator". If the car is idling, warmed up with no electrical load, push the windscreen warmer button - you should hear and see revs increase as alternator changes to "active charging".

So if it's not a wipers deicer switch, the only other thing I can imagine - that one would be a "Little Red Light On/Off Switch Button". ;)

Early Hyundai Tucsons came with this too. Bit of an odd feature

In some cases (Foresters) it was just part of a pack - all weather pack was (i think) heated seats, fogs, headlight washers, heated screen.
Id say it adds a nice bit to windscreen replacement costs.

I had it on a Pajero too. Borderline pointless.
