Just wondering if anyone could offer a bit of advice.

I'm trying to figure out if I can put thicker hybrid tyres on a Giant fcr 3? Its already a hybrid, and I'd prefer the larger tyres to the road style. I've no idea if they'd fit and I assume I need a new set of wheels, which the bike is due anyway. Anyone know if that's possible?

How wide are the tyres you have now? Why the need?

    they/them/theirs

Depends on a number of things, but the first one is will the tyre fit the forks and rear triangle, and will they clear the brake. If you have disk brakes the latter is not going to be an issue. I use 37mm CX tyres on my hybrid if I'm planning on doing any off road, and 32mm slicks if not.

Best bet if you're not sure is to drop into your local bike shop and see what they have to offer.

    look at this link

    http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

There is a handy chart "Width Considerations" which will help you identify what tyre width can safely fit on each rim size.

You will just fit 28mm tyres on an FCR3 and they will fit on the stock wheels. You'll only manage clip-on mudguards with these though. Maybe raceblades or similar.

You'd have to check the clearance. Last time I look the giants were pretty tight.

Not sure, will have to check that. I'd like to be able to take it off road now and again, was going to buy something closer to a mountain bike, but I can't really justify the expense unfortunately. I'm probably just trying to do things it's not built for, but it gets punctured more than it should on roads alone, even with strict attention to pumping the tyres.

Yeah probably will just get the bike shop to see if they can do it, but no disk brakes, and not a lot of space to add wider tyres from the looks of it.

    Cheers for the responses folks!

I got a Dash 2 for the girlfriend on the btw and the largest tyres we could get on it were 28mm, got the shop to change to Maxxis Refuse 28mm. Very comfortable for her as I can put about 70-80 psi without any fear of a pinch puncture.

I've taken mine off road in the past on 25mm tyres. Not impossible but fairly tough.
