Car Accident

I got a quote from a garage nearly 3 weeks ago, I negotiated with them on costing an after getting a re quote I agreed to the amount to be paid saving me roughly €130, so parts were ordered in.

Just got a phone call from the garage today, saying on further inspection another part was damaged coming to €130 and they have asked me to pay for this, I feel I should not have to pay anymore than what I was originally agreed especially considering that it has now been 4 weeks since the accident.

Does anyone know where I stand on this? Thanks

So they gave you a quote for a piece but they discovered that further work was required after they started the work? and you think that the garage should pay for this further work? Or would you be happy for them just to do the work they have already quoted for?

Yeah I think I should not have to pay for the further work as its been 3-4 weeks since the quote for repair, and now they are saying there is further damage and need another part. I would be happy if they did the work I was quoted?

How would I stand if I refused to pay for the extra part? After all it has been 3-4 weeks since the quote anything could of happened to the car while waiting for repair to be done.

OP, can you just tell them to do the original job - or is this another part that must be repaired? In which case it sounds like the oldest trick in the book - give the punter the lowest estimate and then 'discover' another fault that has to be fixed, usually involving the steering where you can't simply elect to ignore it.

You got a quote for a piece of work. That quote did not include this new part. Sometimes damage is not apparent until work starts as a part may be covered by another component and hence the damage is not visible. I cannot see the garage doing extra work (including the supply of a part) for nothing and i cant see how they would be liable to.

Thats how it feels at the moment, apparently a skid plate so I am not sure how important that part is.

Yeah I understand, I am not saying they are liability just annoyed that we had an agreed price an now they are asking for more money. If they have not reported the damage first time then how can they prove it was damaged due to the accident?

how could they not notice that a skid plate was damaged?? It should be pretty obvious. Have you asked them how they didnt notice it was damaged?

Sounds pretty weak. Skid plate should have been noticeable and the car should be fixable without it. You should post a few vehicle details in the Motors forum and see what they say.

It sounds like they are trying to scam you. You should name and shame the garage. Or threaten them that you will call Joe Duffy.

TO be honest thats how I feel aswell, that they are pulling a fast one or the discount I got was not allowed so they are trying to cover themselves. Just wanted to see where I stand if I refuse to pay the extra an only pay my original quote.

You can always take the car back as is, unrepaired, and get a second opinion.

However it does happen that during the course of repair work further damage comes to light that was not immediately apparent. Or perhaps they were trying to save you a few quid initially by hoping to reuse this part, only to discover that its more damaged than they had realised?

I dont know the full story, and neither does anyone else on here. The only way to know for sure is to get someone to look over the car and give you a second opinion.

We only have one side of the story here; bit unfair to suggest naming them or contacting Joe Duffy dont you think? For all we know its all completely above board.

I agree I wouldn't name anybody, It is a legitimate business even if they are trying to pull a fast one, the issue is that they were asked to check over the car over 3 weeks ago and now that repair has commenced they have suddenly found more problems, it just doesn't make sense considering they were asked to give full estimate which meant check the car out completely .

Just to clear this is somebody else car that I am paying for and I want to fix the problem for them as I said I would, they have gone to a garage of there choice, reputable dealer. I just find a bit annoying that they are now adding more to the original quote given, as the final price should of been given to me 3 weeks ago.

Sometimes you cannot give a full estimate until work has commenced (ie you strip down some parts to find that others have been damaged). A garage is not going to carry out a few hours labour just to give you a full estimate. These things happen with this sort of work; now Im not saying that it doesnt mean that they are trying to pull a fast one, but its entirely possible (probable even) that they are not. A second opinion is the only way to know for sure.
