I was hoping to get a flock number nxt yr for hens etc and i'm wondering is this sufficient for commericial tax? Also what requirement do you have to have in place to get a flock number i.e housing feed, numbers required, disease control, Department Inspections etc.

You do need a flock number for hens if you only keep one.
Simple form to fill out. Here is a link to the Dept website where you can download the form, fill it out and send it to your local District Veterinary Office. Option 6 - PR1 form.

There is no on farm check unless you keep other livestock with an existing herd number.

Regarding commercial tax on a vehicle ???
I suppose if you need the vehicle to transport hens/chicks to a factory or sale and it forms part of your income ???
    Best to check with Revenue.ie

Have a neighbour that uses his 7 hens to get commercial tax, but I also know it depends on the county you're in

I had the same problem with Longford C.C. a couple of months ago. I bought a cheap run around Ford Courier van. I do have BTE herd number but not a tax clearance cert. I had to transfer the van into OH's name and use his tax clearance cert to tax it.

Herd number is irrelevant imo. Whether you make a self assessment tax return might be more like it.

I don't keep an other existing herd number but it is on the family farm where we have sucklers alright. I see on one form that it covers pheasant so that be great but like that i suppose you will need a tax clearance cert and info signed by guards to get your tax. I'm hoping to purchase a jeep preferably a landcruiser sometime nxt yr for myself.

so does that mean every farmer in the country is screwed bcos there herd number is not acceptable even if they have a tax clearance cert and things?

No,it states that an original Tax Clearence Cert. is acceptable if it's in date.
