    Hi,
My brother is coming back from the uk and will be staying with us for a few months until he sorts himself out. He's bringing his car home which he has owned for 2 years so no vrt to pay. As he is going to live with us and as I'm unemployed we planned to share the car while he's with us. I was told that only he would be allowed to drive the car until a year has passed after importing, is that true ?

Rubbish. As long as you're insured, work away.

He won't be able to sell the car or transfer the ownership for a year after importing it, but there would be no restriction on you driving it.

Don't drive it until it's been reregistered.

If your brother is coming home for a few months with his car and then returning, you are not be allowed by law, to drive his car.
If he is staying, once the car is rereg'd and you are added to his policy then there will be no problem.

Go to the Revenue website and look up Transfer of Residence and your question will be answered.
Are there restrictions on the sale or disposal of a Vehicle which has been granted Tax Relief?

Yes. You may not sell, dispose of, hire out or lend the vehicle during the 12 months following the date of registration. If you do, the VRT (Customs Duty and VAT if appropriate) must be paid in full.
