Thinking of using woodchip for bedding. Does anybody know if it can be got from recycling yards in the midlands or where to get reasonably priced fresh stuff?

Try "Wilton Waste", Crosserlough, Cavan, Ask for Rodney.
They shred a lot of pallets and ne-nail them etc.

Also I know the local swimming pool has put in a pellet boiler, so I can ask on Monday who supplies them.

Blue, try and make sure the woodchip is the right size for what you want. I've been using it for a few years in different systems and found that the best chip for sheep on an indoor system is finely shredded stuff, mostly old doors that have the egg carton type filler in it, shredded formica and the likes, no bigger than 2" as it gives great soakage. I put in about a foot or 18" before housing and when it starts to get a bit matted I can turn it over with the loader and the stuff underneath is as fresh as when it went in.
Larger chips from pallets, recycled timber is best for the bulls but wouldn't give as great soakage but if you're happy to give a deep bed then they will turn it over themselves. It takes a lot of nitrogen to break down larger chips when spread on the fields if you haven't let it rot down.
Costs me about £150 delivered for an 8 wheeler load.

Is there any problem with metal, varnish or paint in the re-cycled stuff? I think if you stack it over the summer after it's mucked out and add urea to it, it breaks down a bit better. £150 a load sounds cheap, any idea how many cubic M in that?
