We have been told we can not get insurance as our car needs a new engine due to contamination , we need to pay €4500
for new engine , while the morons doing this get off with a €700 euro fined . while at the garage there for 5 mins and 4 people same problem so its happening big time in roscommon and the west of Ireland .

Petrol Station review website would be nice.

A blacklist of dodgy stations would put stations off trying to sell washed fuel, or at least would give some kind of transparency to ones that don't try to resolve the situation.

I mean if a supermarket sells you gone off food and makes you sick you can sue the arse off them

At the moment a petrol station can sell you crap fuel, causing thousands in damage and also make a problem for you to get to work and go about your daily life and they can fob you off saying its not their problem.

Over here if they were caught selling fuel that was substandard the whole place would be shutdown by the Douane within hours.

I heard petrol stretching is rife in Mayo with loads of new cars with severe engine damage..

I am genuinely at a loss to know why these places aren't surrounded by Revenue backed up by Garda armed units.

If it's too good to be true, it isn't! If you have a fairly dodgy looking independent garage selling diesel way cheaper that anywhere else close by then chances are it could be dodgy fuel. People get all excited at the prospect of saving €2 on a fill and neglect the potential issues from putting poor quality into their diesel engines.

It's a false economy, never put overly cheap diesel from an independent into your car unless the source of the diesel is verified.

I do have to laugh at people who go for the cheapest fuel save 2e on a fill up and spend 5e getting there and back.
Personally I stick with what works, never changed fuel station never had a problem

Indeed, if it looks too good to be true it always is.

If you drive into one of these places that's just a hut and a few pumps or a run down dirty looking forecourt then you can't expect the same result as a properly branded/licensed station.

I get mine in Topaz or Maxol generally myself. Never any issues with any of the diesels I've owned/had. Costs maybe €2/3 more but that's a small price to pay vs the cost of a new engine.

    Let's see....

    -Unbranded / unknown brand pumps
-suspiciously cheap compared to other stations in the vicinity.
    -No services other than fuel
-Opening and closing on same site "under new ownership" at a high frequency.
    -Cash sales only.

It doesn't take much common sense. I have to laugh at people who're driving a new 25-30k car that they're willing to wreck the engine of for what, a couple of euro, on a full tank. Fools.
