    i'm new to cycling
and with winter looming i think i may need to be getting winter tyres.

i currently have a giant defy 3 2014 with the standard tyres.

can anyone recommend some good tyres that wont break the bank.

    thanks

Gatorskins for winter, GP4000s for summer. can't go wrong

'Gp4000 Seasons' for winter. Also for summer if you really don't like punctures :)

Dunworth, we're crossing paths a bit lately!

I have the 2011 version of your bike, IIRC the tyres on that were vittiora zaffiro or something similar, I used them through a winter in rain etc and they were fine. I'd see how you go, and only change them if you feel nervous on them.

One tires when one uses tyres.

I've had more than a few wobbles and one incident on my hardshells in the wet, I wouldn't recommend them..

So pretty mixed thoughts between gaterskin and gp4000

    @stone

    Yes I know we have.
What's worrying me is the current tyres are very slick
I haven't actually cycled in wet conditions as of yet so not sure what they are like but I'm not sure if I want to take the risk

    +1 on above,
No probs with gatorskins on dry roads but I find them iffy on wet roads.
Never had a puncture after several years using gatorskins, but have had quite a few slides / offs in recent months on wet roads,
So much so that I have replaced them with gripper tyres sacrificing some puncture resistance.

    I use GP4000's all year.

Gatorskins all winter.! Just put the 'Hardshell' type on, never punctured with standard Gatorskins, gave these a go... Although best tyres I've had for grip, and puncture resistance were Michelin Krylion carbon...Zero flats either..

Your fears are misplaced. Tread doesn't increase wet grip on a bike. If you want more grip buy stickier tyres. The advice you're getting here about winter tyres is steering you towards less puncture prone tyres, which also tend to have less wet grip.

Punctures increase in the wet because debris clings to the tyre and then gets driven in.

So you have to choose between risk of sliding or risk of getting cold and wet changing a tube.

Last year I tried to get around the 'grip or puncture-protection: choose one' issue by using GP4000Ss with latex sealant in my tubes.

Only got one puncture but that was a messy one.

i think tyre size is a factor. I think I've had fewer flats with 25mm than with 23s regardless of the tyre model.
