Cash purchase, log book not sent

Hi guys wondering if you could help me out. About a month ago I bought a car for the missus, cheap little run around for 1000 quid. The guy I bought it from owns a mechanic/valet shop. I paid cash, presumably he wanted to keep it off the books. I didn't receive a receipt for the car but I did have a mate with me to witness the sale. Shannon still haven't received a log book for said car and I am starting to get a little worried. I was just wondering what my options are here? There is no advantage to him keeping the log book so I don't know why he didn't send it. I have rung his mobile several times but no answer. I do know where his shop is at least, but without a receipt of sale its my word against his as to who actually owns the car. What would you do?

Probably an honest mistake. No advantage to him to have the logbook. Call into him and ask him to send it on.

Or else drive through the M50 toll section 10 or 15 times and he won't be long getting it sorted!

Did you speak to Shannon about the logbook or check online or something?
There may be a perfectly valid reason for it so I'd swing by him and simply ask if it was sent.

My money is on the guy who sold it to you didn't get a log book with the car when he bought it.

May not work, all the seller has to do is show a photocopy and say it couldn't possibly be him and that's him off the hook. And even if it did prompt him to send the original, the OP will still be landed with all those fines since the VLC has the date of transfer of ownership recorded. If the seller is not forthcoming the OP should contact Shannon, there's a procedure for claiming registered ownership.

Except from case where seller is a scammer and now is going to report a car stolen. OP doesn't have any document confirming he actually bought it.

Happened to me as well. Had to apply to Shannon to get it in the end

did you actually sign the log book, your address, date and time of sale?
(ps,next time use your phone to photo the logbook details before you drive away)

that is why it's a good idea to take a photo of the log book after both parties signed it

Sadly with Shannon it can take many months for some unknown reason, I waited 3 months for the last car I bought and had already started the procedure with the solicitor to get it into my name when, just after getting off the phone to Shannon confirming it still wasn't there it arrived in my name, date of sale correct etc.

So basically Op, did you actually see (and sign) the logbook ?
If not, you have now learnt a valuable lesson. Always see & sign the VLC and preferably witness the seller sticking same in a post box.

By the way, you don't actually have to drive through the M50 toll several times to get a bit of a reaction from the seller, or perhaps the innocent registered owner.....especially if, like most of the population, you don't live in Dubland.
Just get one or two Parking Tickets to achieve the same result (without a photo of the Driver, which suits you even more).

Alright lads. Seller said he forgot to post it. I believe him, he seems honest and was very apologetic. I did sign it with a mate to witness it. Thanks for the help.
