    As above.

On the next page the IFJ appointed James Maloney as Machinery editor.

    Just saying.

The IFJ is a good read and very informative but they keep bumping up the price.

It a bit like the local paper. You buy it most weeks and after you look through it you wonder why did I bother

There's always some snippet of information though that's worth reading, like the Vets article this week about the importance of protein in calves diet.

But but but they cover all the relevant topics when they are in the news ie the horsemeat thingie;the bord bia boycott;milk quota mix ups;conflicts of interest etc etc.No fear of them running away from the hard stories.
Shur where would we be without all those experts feeding us what we should be aware of.

On a serious note ,would agree its the same as buying the local rag,the one week you miss it there is sure to be a story that everyone is talking about.Otherwise its just a habit.
With the advent of done deal does anyone even give the classifieds any more than a glance, esp. since they changed the format/layout a while back.

The technical/advice bits are the same old same old year in year out.Thinking back over the last year was there any story(of importance)that they broke? Was there any article that you read and said;well never knew that or thats something useful to know.
From a drystock farmers point of view find its very much dairy orientated.

After saying all the above will admit to buying it every week(really like the crossword in the "ladies" section!)

I think its a lot of same old same old, I usually buy it 4 or 5 times a year when there,s something in it that I wanna know about. Really don't like there sales pitch "you cannot offered to miss it" yes you can:confused:

I used to do that, I only bought it twice in the last 8 years and survived grand without it. A lot of farmers treat it like their bible.

I do the same. Then shout out the prices to dad and ask him to guess the animal:o

First stop is Vet's corner, followed by weather though.

    Then the crossword!

Order of journal reading with me:

    1. Love the crossword - do some at night, get stuck, next morning it 'why the f**k didn't I think of that'
    2. Looking for love section -those bits can be even more cryptic sometimes:confused:
    3. The rest.
    Kinda sad

Like all papers it when using it to light fire I see bit which makes me wonder how I missed it the first time

Something similar. Firstly a quick look through it. Taking note of anything interesting. read the dealer, buildings section and then the machinery in that order. Try to get back to it from Friday on but there has been times where I've never picked it up again after.

talking to a auctioneer from wicklow, the amount of lads that carried away in the good times is now coming out, banks calling in the money,a lot of land up for sale near us ,all bought in the good times .

I've gone off the journal since one of the writers told me they publish everything they write so no quality control.
But sayin that I still flick through it to see if there's anyone I know in it

They don't cover all relevant topics. Only do soming on vegetables or potatoes like once a year.
It should be called the Irish "grassland" farmers journal.

Something you buy once a week goes up 10c

If a bag of meal went up 10c would you bat an eyelid?

Wait and see, a great farm sold beside me for less than €7000 that would've made ten two years ago, leased to one of the best farmers in the area for the last twelve years, a fine house, sheds, roadway up through the middle of it, fenced and paddocked for sheep and cattle, just ready to step into 200 ac
    Have a look

What its worth and what it makes are to totally different things(but 4000k a acre is poor in any mans language) in my option land with out good sheds or a house is never worth more than 11k a acre, milk prices are good at the moment put that wont be the case for most years

Yea I agree all around that general area from ballacolla to durrow would make you green with envy,

Had to detour from ballyragget through fresh ford to kilkenny, another eye opener

And don't get me started on the land south of Kilkenny heading to wAterford, every time I pass that that I nearly cry

and you wouldnt believe me if i told you if you went about 20 miles north of ballyragget heading carlow/kk border in a certain area youd see fields of rushes/forestry etc. .... some very good land in all the areas you have mentioned, them lads think hardship is fields burning up due to lack of rain ha
