Looks poor alright, if it were my door I'd forget about staining/ varnishing and just paint it with oil-based paints in a nice colour. The pins fixing the sheeting are rusting and no varnish will hide that successfully. Sand down, 1 coat of aluminium wood primer, follow with 1 or 2 coats of undercoat (fill any holes/ damage and sand down), finish with exterior gloss. The render bead over the head is rusting also, sand back and prime with red oxide primer or just undercoat with oil based paint before repainting the wall in weathershield. Would be a good idea to run a bead of acrylic caulk at the joint of the weatherboard at bottom of door (to prevent water running behind the board and lodging there).

I hate varnish with a passion all the sandinglayers etc.
Sand it down now and rub oil into it then once or twice a year just rub the oil in..no standing and hassle
