Company Tax Number

Hey guys, I just have a quick question. I recently started a job with a company about a month ago and since they have just expanded to Ireland they have informed me that they have no company tax number. I'm just wondering is this in any way dodgy? I rang the tax office and they have no record of the company name on records or the managing director. It's a small company with a small number of workers. I'm just worried as at the moment I'm on rougly 52% tax.

    Any replies greatly appreciated!

Are you receiving payslips? Are they deducting Prsi, USC? Did you ask revenue if you have been registered as an employee? You are probably paying emergency tax until they sort out your tax credits etc, you will get the extra tax paid back.

How a company runs it's tax affairs really isn't your concern as long as they are paying your wages and are paying your taxes and levies, the company could be registered it the Isle of Man, guernsey, Bahamas etc.

The company has an obligation under Irish tax law to register as an employer and operate PAYE. So it's odd if it is deducting (or purporting to deduct) PAYE and telling you that it doesn't have a number.

If the company doesn't register then Revenue have draconian powers open to them:

2.1.2 Failing to register with the Revenue Commissioners

Where an employer pays income which is within the scope of the PAYE system but fails to register for that purpose, the Revenue Commissioners may compulsorily register the employer, estimate the tax due and seek payment of the amount of deductions the employer should have made under the PAYE system from the income paid to employees.

In other words they can collect the PAYE from the employee.

52% is the emergency tax rate in Ireland.

So this is dodgy as f*** in my eyes.
