    Not just greed.
I heard that the pineapple crop has failed in Leitrim so no pineapples for the poor this year.

So you mean feed well or survive? An adult male will survive eating nothing but eating 12kg potatoes a day. Easy to work it out from there as an example.

    This might be some help

    Excerpt -
For simplest cultivation, most calories, and providing for storage for those NOT in a year-round growing climate, suggest growing this mix:
Assumptions: We need to provide 2000 calories per day per person.
We get 25% of our calories from each of the four crops listed
The prototype garden is laid out in 50-foot by 5-foot beds (3ft of growing area and 2-ft paths between)
We can achieve and maintain average yields comparable to those shown, as taken from reference books and my own records.
    The crop mix:
    Dried beans (yield 10lb per 100ft of row @ 2000 cals/lb) Dried corn (yields 20lb per 100ft of row @ 1800 cals/lb) Potatoes (yield 150lb 100ft of row @ 450 cals/lb) Winter squash (yields 350lb 100ft of row @ 250 cals/lb)
With these assumptions, growing these crops in sufficient quantity for 1 person for 1 year would require about 4,000 square ft. Note this DOES NOT allow for growing cover crops to replenish soil nutrients. Soil should be taken out of production 1 year in 3; so rotate 3 2000 sq ft plots, with 2 in production and1 growing a cover crop, resulting a total of 6,000 sq ft required per person.
