Speed App?

Anyone know of a Speedometer app where you can mark points/locations where the speed limits are and sounds a warning when you are over the limit?

I'm almost at a point now where I'm verging on a speed ban with 2 fines within the last 9 months (Jan & august, another in Dec 2011). I was driving like an auld granny last weekend on the n11 coming up on Stillorgan heading into town and there is a possibility that I may have been caught again. Speedometer was at about 65/66 km as I was passing a white speed van in a 60km zone. So may have another on the way in the post.

I have every intention of keeping well within the speed limit but don't want to get caught doing stupid speeds a few km's over the limit by accident.

    Thanks

Most of the sat nav apps I have used have had an option for speed limit warning.
    What phone have you?

It's an android. HTC one. Just looking for an app that literally screams a warning at me if I go over even a bit lol

TomTom Navigation App on Android starts beeping when you go over 5kph.

Sounds good but looking for an inexpensive app really. Just paid off a fine there last week so no money :(

Could you possibly disclose one of these ways to me via pm? ;)

    I don't mind kissing, but I hate that! :)

I know you meant 'over by 5km/h', btw. ;)

I think this is something that will be in cars in the future.

Where it would read the road sign and automático tell you the speed limit or have it built into the sat nav where it would show up on the dash.

But for now... speed limit signs. ...

    Doesnt Waze have this functionality?
CoPilot definitely does (Bastard thing always giving out to me >_> )

The Insignia could do that in 2008!

The satnav app on my phone can tell you the speed limit via the GPS location, so it wouldn't be a stretch for any manufacturer to have the same functionality on an OE satnav.

Speed signs can be easy to miss, I normally see them but the odd time I can miss one eg. Fairview - got caught going around 60km in a 50km zone almost 3 years ago. Didn't see a 50km sign, even on Googlemaps. There is one now. Coming from Howth there is a 60km sign on the coast road which I presumed at the time included Fairview. I think there should be more signs tbh

I checked Waze, doesn't seem to have it. You can report traffic issues and speed cameras but doesn't look like it doesn't warn you about speed until you are near a speed van.

CoPilot looks good if it were free :( If I have the cash anytime soon I'll prob get it.

You should always assume its 50km/h unless otherwise stated or its obvious that it isn't. The few seconds it will cost you ain't worth the fine.

Volvos do this now. They read the road signs and a little logo appears on the dash to show you what the limit is and when you go over it. It also tells you when you're straying too close to the lines.

The new X-Trail reads signs as well (just displays it, doesn't make any sound or other judgements on your speed :)). It also does lane line warning but I only use it on motorways.

I think it's in new Fords too.

Out of all the Apps I tried today, "Trapster" seemed to work the best for me. Current speed and updates the speed limits when needed. Relies on other user info regarding road hazards and known speed traps/checkpoints. Of course, it wouldn't be accurate real time as those speed vans could be parked anywhere and would need someone using Trapster to locate them.

The only problem I found with the apps mentioned on the thread that I tested out is that there are no audible warnings when you go past the speed limit, which is mainly what I'm looking for as I don't want to keep looking looking at my phone wondering if I'm going over the speed or not. Decent apps nevertheless.

Current legislation doesn't prohibit you from using a phone while driving. You can't hold or support it, but you can use it provided you arn't texting or emailing. The legislation is actually pretty laughable to be honest for instance facebook messaging is ok under it.

Yeah some speed limits are just ridiculously stupid. For eg, I live in the middle of nowhere on a crappy little back road (with potholes, dangerous bends, tractors, cows and sheep) where you need to pull into a gateway of sorts so vehicles / animals coming in the opposite direction can pass. The speed limit is 80km/h on that road. If I went 80km/h on that road even once, I wouldn't survive to tell the tale. Even at 50km/h is pushing it.

The main road connected to it is a proper 2 lane main road with road markings, not a tremendous amount of traffic on it and it's a 60km/h zone. Now is it me or is that one hard to understand?

Yes the 60 kph limit on the N11 by UCD is ludicrous, especially when you see this stretch of road near Ballinskelligs in Co. Kerry where the limit is 80 kph ......
