Being Asked To Sign

So i've been working for a company for over 8 years. Never any problems, have worked so many more hours over the years, never moaned, never asked for time back.

Last friday i was late, We have until 10am to contact the office if we are late or absent. (in Contract)

I rang at 9,45 got through to reception and they put me through, the phone rang, NO Answer, so i just jumped in the car and went to work. only 10 mins away.

Today the boss calls me in with some made up letter to sign that if i'm late and blah blah blah that i have to do this and that etc... Already staes all this in my contract.

But he wants me to sign this one. just me and no one else.

I said no, now he's getting pissy.

Do i have to sign this junk? Seeing as i've already signed it per my contract. Plus i don't like the fact that every other person strolls in whenever and they aren't asked to sign anything.

    Any advise would be great.

Why do you think he's doing this to you?

Why do you think he's doing this to you?

Because he's new and he's looking to be the great lad in front of all the other head guys.

He called me in on the day, i told him i rang, reception confirmed, they had the call logged and showed him. I said I'm sorry , explained why i was late and said i'd work up the time.

But now he's pulling out this extra document crap???

I don't know to be honest. I'm just not signing something that I've already signed and that no one else is being asked to sign.

    Because he's new

Is it possible he's sensing you don't respect him or you've been rude to him?

I suppose he could say it is some new process. What's going to be done with these letters though? Will the next thing be that you get a written warning or something if you get 3 of them. Generally any new policy should be properly consulted on and formally rolled out. I would refuse on the basis you haven't been given enough information and don't see how or to whom this will be applied.

I don't respect him, I'm not rude to him, if he wants help i give him help, if he needs anything i'm the first one there to help him with anything.

He's a fool, hasn't a clue what he's doing, how he got the job i will never know??? He's already had 4 people go to HR aboput him in the 4-5 months he's there.

But you have a point, he does be around chatting and joking and i don't engage, because i have no time for bull**** like that, i want to go in do my job and go home. I don't get paid to talk bollocks all day

This is why this is happening.

He thinks you're a **** and he is going to make your life hell.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong.

Yes it states in the letter that the next it may mean disciplinary action will be takin. Buit its already in my contract so i see no need for this extra document

So i'm the c**t here, i guess it makes sense really.

If i refuse to sign can he sack me thats the real question. If it was all done legit and HR got involved and it applied to all, then fine, i wouldn't mind signing.

Its just the cheek of the guy after everything I've done for the place.

Don't think I would be signing it. Check with hr if it is a new procedure or what!

I'm saying he thinks that. That's all.

You're in a tricky situation. The way I see it, you have two options.

    1. Refuse to sign it. Make it a HR incident. He will hate you forever and you will eventually need to move teams or find another job. (Or hope he quits, but in the meantime he might badmouth you to his superiors).

    2. Repair your relationship with him. That will start with signing the paper and inviting him for lunch. This is actually the smart option, but of course is much more difficult.

I agree with this! Check with your HR dept. You said it was a 'made-up' letter, no way would I sign anything that wasn't policy god knows what you'd be signing for. If it is a new policy get some clarification on it and check if any of your work colleagues are aware of same.

Trust me, you are not the only one with similar problem.
My manager was blaming me for what happen in my private life and he wanted me to sign some papers too..
I refused. Didnt want to sign something that wasnt true.

I think I'll calm down a bit first :-) but I'm not signing anything . I followed procedure.

I rang and reception messed up the call. its on their records it's on mine.

unless the whole company is sign this document I won't be signing anything.

You're under no obligation to sign this unless it is part of the disciplinary process as documented in your contract. If he brings it up then ask him to explain why you are being singled out while others have not previously asked to sign anything for being late.

I'm with Mr Loverman, you can do either the legal thing or the smart thing. Which to do depends on how easy it will be for you to get another job somewhere else.

If there's nothing in the letter that's not already in your contract, then I don't see any danger in signing it. It may even be beneficial if things go legal later on, because it gives you written evidence that different procedures were applied to you.

Oh - and unless it's public sector (which I'm pretty sure you're not), then you don't have to be consulted about changes to procedures.

Is it possible that he's trying to crack down on people coming in late (and it has nothing to do with you or your relationship with him). Other people who were questioned about being late might have said that we've always been able to get away with it and he is now having people sign this document to confirm that they know the terms of their contact and that the policy is now being enforced
