What would you do?

    Hi all,

    What would you do here?

Basically I've been offered a decent paying job in a legal department of a bank (24k per year), not sure what prospects of promotion are like etc. in there.

And I've been offered an apprenticeship to train as a Solicitor on min wage paying 35 hours a week. Obviously probation periods etc. apply in both.

I have all my professional exams done, have office experience, and always wanted to qualify as a Solicitor. But the money above is appealing to me, at least for a while, and who knows it could help the CV and help with contacts when looking for apprenticeships again.

Some have said take the bank it will be great experience, others have said if you want to qualify as a Solicitor then take the apprenticeship now and qualify because if it's offered then the experience of the bank doesn't matter.

    TL;DR

What do you guys think I should do? Take a job now with decent money and maybe some promotion opportunity if I like it, and worst comes to worst I build up contacts and the CV looks good when looking for an apprenticeship again. Or, take the lowly paid (for the next 3 years) apprenticeship offered now and do what you always wanted and qualify.

There's your answer! Take the solicitor job.

I worked in the bank for a little while. It's soul destroying.

This is just temporary. Think long term...

    Thanks.

    I think I will.

However; I know I have some experience already regarding solicitor's offices etc., but, I still wonder what will happen if a few months or a year down the line it turns out I regret my decision, don't like the line of work, the people I'm with, or indeed I do like it but I just seem to be bad at it.

I'd be raging I turned down an opportunity to work in such a department in a huge bank with maybe promotion if you work hard.

My head is officially all over the place.....

What's harder to get: a solicitors apprenticeship or a legal job in a bank?

Go with your gut. You always wanted to be a solicitor and ultimately, will be more rewarding and the money will be far better than 24k.

I suppose 24k isn't great money. And tbh I don't know which is harder, I'm told nailing down an apprenticeship is very hard, even one on min wage, I wouldn't know about a bank job as it was my first time applying for same and my original plan was to do it until I got an apprenticeship but then interviews started flying in for apprenticeships.
