Mobo and CPU upgrade

    Hi guys,

I'm making a new thread as my old one is confusing and off topic

I recently upgraded to a r9 290x and tonight playing crysis 3, I noticed my i5 760 was really bottle necking it in parts aswell as getting dangerous temps 85 + -.

It's overclocked to 3.8ghz, but doesn't do the job anymore, I've had it 4 years now and it's served me well

I'm looking at this CPU http://www.hardwareversand.de/en/Sockel+1150/170309/Intel+Core+i7-4790K+Box%2C+LGA1150.article

I really need advice on a motherboard and good cooler for overclocking, I'm looking to spend around 150 euro on both and for it to support crossfire when I add another r9 290 in the future

I have a haf 932 and a cooler master 750w psu with ddr3 ram, a samsung 120gb ssd, a 1 TB barracude hd, so I assume they`ll all be fine to reuse in a new build

    Any suggestions would be great

I wouldn't advise crossfiring 290's. Even with the best coolers and good case airflow you might have issues with heat. Those cards eat power as well. 250w a piece so you're cutting it tight with 750w.

Is it only gaming or do you do cpu heavy work as well? An i5 would be just as good if only gaming.

Also what resolution are you gaming at? A single 290x will demolish all games at 1080p. You won't need 2.

ASrock do some of the best value boards. Look at the Z97 pro 4 for single gpu, Z97 extreme 4 for crossfire.

This cooler is great for the money as well.

Hi Bloodbath thanks for the reply

I'm not intending to crossfire anytime soon, just having an option in the future to do so, I have the tri-x version so heat isn't really an issue

I'm gaming at 1080p so the single card will do me a long time yet

Thanks for suggesting those boards and that cooler, I`ll look into them :)

My only confusion is the new boards using usb3, the haf 932 doesn't support usb3, will I still have some usb3 ports on the back regardless?

    Thanks again

Heat and noise will be an issue if you try to crossfire them. The top card will reach 85c+ no matter how good the air cooling which will push the fan speeds high and make the card loud.

It's just a header on the board, it won't matter if the case doesn't have it. You will still have the back ports and your front usb2 ports.

    Cheers,

Think I`ll go ahead and order that mobo and cooler

One last question, I have this 6GB 3x2 of this ram atm 6GB-Kit Corsair DDR3 PC1333 C9 Classic

Could you point me a 2GB stick that's compatible with that?

I really appreciate the help, I'm not familiar with ram types

    No problem.

Any matching spec ram should do fine.

Looks fine, just make sure the voltages are the same.

    Was looking at this board

    http://www.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsps?adp=0&aid=169030&agid=2242&apop=1

Little dearer but seen online its a bit better for overclocking

Everything ok with it? Last question I swear :)

    It's micro atx

Bit worried about the heat sinks on those boards too, they seem high and might block the r9 290 since its 31 cm

I doubt it's any better for overclocking to be honest.

The extreme4 has 12 phase power design, that one only has 8. The processor and cooling will limit you long before the board does anyway.

The heatsinks won't block any gpus. That design would be stupid if it did.

Kinda stuck here, the pc is up and running but the mobo isn't detecting my r9 290, I tried two different pci-e slots. The fans aren't spinning either.

It detects my old gtx 460 without problems.

I'm installing windows onto my ssd atm. My psu is a 700w cooler master so that isn't a issue either

Sorted now, bad cable management :)

    Hi Bloodbath,

thanks for the recommendations, the cooler and mobo are great. At 4.4ghz using intel burn test the cpu peaks at 58c :)

I think I got a good chip, voltage is around 1.18 on full load!

Tomorrow I`ll try get a good stable overclock, so tired now. Started at 6pm and only finished up now, first time building from pretty much scratch

    Thanks again
