Silver/Grey trees along N1/M1 - near toll booth

Anybody know the type of tree used in the embankments along the N1/M1 a few miles either side of the toll booth - with silver/grey ish leaves, fairly noticable in comparison with the greenery.

I'm guessing white or grey poplar, but would like to know. ( did'nt have time or safe place to stop)

They really stand out to anyone who drives that road now - or to me anyway.

Not much to go on there but I looked across the road and the image there is in winter and may be 2013? and at a guess I'd say alder, if there is a purple haze of buds in the small branches and twigs, and its not just a shadow

Most likely Silver Birch, quick growing hardwood

Thanks, but not silver birch. The leaves were silver/blue/grey and really stands out against normal green leaves.
