    "i before e except after c"

    Nonsense!

    See:

beige, deify, feisty, foreign, forfeit, freight, heifer, height, neighbour, neither, peignoir, sovereign, weight, weird

    among others

So what other school "rules" turned out to be myths?

That the Junior Cert was important.

Actually, the same thing could be argued for the Leaving Cert.

    The rule:
    i before e,
    Except after c,
    Or when sounded as "a,"
    As in neighbour and weigh.

The "ie" combinations he posted in those words come "after C", so they prove his point. ;)

Found this, think it was the full rhyme

    "i" before "e", except after "c",
Unless you seize the weird sovereignty
    Of your neighbour's feisty kaleidoscope,
    According to the pope.

The teachers I had lied to themselves. Not me.

Never, ever worth the money they were paid, with too many holidays.

Never would you see anyone to look themselves in the mirror with such an undeserved sense of accomplishment.

    Lies, lies, lies.

OP, can you remember your teacher telling you to stop eating your crayons?

I can. But they were too tasty. MMmmmm, crayons :)

Why are these in your list?

They feature an 'i' and an 'e' directly following a 'c'. Whereas apparently an 'i' and 'e' combination, generally perfectly acceptable, should be an exception after a 'c'.

They tried to claim that English spelling is logical and regular!

Sadly, it's a system absolutely full of oddball spellings that are more about convention than logic and it's actually an extremely non phonetic language. The pronunciations only vaguely match the spellings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,106 ✭✭✭catallus

    All language is convention!

Yeah but some conventions like Spanish spelling actually make sense!

English spelling is largely, completely bonkers.

Spanish!? You're using Spanish as an example of making sense?!

    This angers me :(

They use Q's for K's and make funny shapes under their C's

Almost perfectly phonetic. Just learn a few pronunciation rules and you can read Spanish scripts and sound like you know what you're taking about.

With English that's impossible as you'll keep encountering totally irregular spelling.

A large portion of the stuff taught in school is a load of crap. Why should my knowledge of McBeth or Romeo and Juliet dictate an exam result that will affect me for the rest of my life? Because I'm literally never going to need to know about it!

Yeah, according to the irish government I don't speak English.

    Crazier than you think:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_language_influences_in_English

English is fairly unique in Europe in that it is strongly hybridized with very heavy influences from both Germanic/Old English and Latin/Romanic languages as well as having been ridden hard and put away wet by modern French.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_language_influences_in_English#mediaviewer/File:Origins_of_English_PieChart.svg

Because of this, it is difficult, if not impossible, to pin modern English down with any hard and fast rules like one can do with a vastly Germanic or Latin language.

So, basically, if you can speak both Irish and English well, you've mastered two rather difficult languages. Kudos(that's Greek, so probably the same in Irish as well...)
