So the hunt for my wedding dress has just started, and I really don't like anything I have seen so far! I have quite definite ideas about what I want, has anyone here Had a dress made? And if so, is it ridiculously expensive? Thanks a million!

I am interested to hear too. The only dresses that have caught my interest are bhldn but no shops this side of the Atlantic. I do have a ball gown the design of which would be lovely for wedding dress but haven't seen anything like it. Would be cool, to know if you could get similar made.

I have heard of a dress maker in Dublin city centre who specializes in making vintage dresses, any of the dress makers who have websites seem to start at €600 but it's hard to judge because it obviously Will depend on what we want! I just think it would be lovely to get something made if it's at all affordable!

The website looks great, I would be so nervous buying online, maybe you could report back when you get your dress if you don't mind? The photos look great though! :-)

Make sure you at least try on the style of dress you have in mind. I had a specific style in mind and when I tried it on it did nothing for me. Went in a totally different direction, one I didn't expect to go in.

I had my bridesmaids dresses made by a Chinese seller on ebay. They are fab, very well made and well fitting.

i will.. i did lots of research before ordering, theres a forum called weddingbee that has 100s of pages of girls that ordered and post pics of their dresses from there, that totally made my mind up for me :) plus i only paid 50% of total and will pay the other half when i have seen final pics of my dress!!

I know someone who ordered online and hated it but left it so late all she could do was alter it to fit better. You'd need plenty of time and maybe money - I wonder what the returns policy, if any, is if you order custom fit dresses?

This is the person I have heard about, don't know anything about her to be honest. After trying on some dresses last week I'm gonna buy one in a bridal shop, the ideas I had in mind for my dress, tea length, 1950s etc all looked so dreadful on me! What worked way better was long and fitted (I'm very short and a curvy size ten so I never thought long and fitted would worK! Good luck with it!

its amazing when you try on what you had your heart set on and it looks meh and then you put on the one style you swore blind you'd never wear and it looks amazing! That happened to me. And pretty much every bride I've spoken to about it!

Check out The Sew Zone as well, she quoted me 150 each to make the BM dresses, and we would have to provide the fabric and embellishments.

I'm having my dress made!! I cant wait :) Its definitely costing less than what I thought - there is alot of detail in mine & they are making my headpiece aswell & its barely coming to €900!

Hi Guys, just out of curiosity do these prices include fabric or not?

Soon to be sister-in-law got her bridesmaid dresses made by a family member for free and all she had to do was provide the fabric which came to about €850. That works out at just over €200 a dress and i'm wondering if you are charged €150 to design and create by a dressmaker does that mean you have to supply your own fabric?

I just want to know before I get a land price wise if I go enquire :p

All of my friends have used Susan in Peekaboo (liffy) in Dublin. for wedding dresses. Two got their dresses made from scratch and they were stunning. One had huge alterations done to her mother's dress - again stunning. The rest of us just got our fittings done. But Susan was amazing - regardless of what she was doing.

The girls who had the dresses made said they were very reasonable - but I can't remember exact prices €600 keeps popping into my head but I don't know for sure.

Mine includes everything - fabric, lace, trim, underskirt & my headpiece with a small veil! They order their fabrics from China so it makes it cheaper but they make everything from scratch :) It takes a good 6 months though - so you need to be planning well in advance, but most brides do with their dress anyway!

My sister is having her dress and the two bridesmaid dresses made by a very talent dressmaker/designer for €900 total. She's in Ireland, in case anyone asks! :D

She's kinda doing this as a once-off as she has moved out of the business now! She's a good friend so that is why she's going it this time! :) But I think getting dresses made is a great way to and my post was just to illustrate this. Get feedback on different dressmakers. Price-wise they tend to be so much more reasonable than buying off the rail!

There's a lady in Cavan, (Virginia, I think) who makes dress and shoes. Lovely work.
