Found a large caterpillar this morning, probably a common one but I cant seem to identify it. It measured about 5 or 6 cm long quite fat, mainly black with yellow length way stripes all over, small yellow dots down its sides. A yellow "V" on its black face and covered in white hair all over. Quite aggressive tried to nip me if I touched it, very strong legs with hook like feet that clung on to a stick, any ideas?

Did it look anything like this one? I had a 'flock' of them strip leaves from a Sweet Chestnut. Some of them were quite big, easily 70-75 mm. Dave

Yes I've come across these. It's Buff-tip. Can be in large groups which disperse a little when they get to this stage.
