2 options - buy an old T25 diesel and get someone to swop over lock, stock and barrel
OR put in LPG conversion, that could also power your cooker ??

Get the 70 BHP turbodiesel version, the ordinary diesel is very underpowered for that van. It's also way more economical.

There's a lot of work involved, but it's a pretty straightforward swap, loads of people have done this. Having said that, the LPG conversion was very common in a lot of countries in the 80's and 90's.

You need to get a proper cost for this job, parts, labour, travel etc. and get a reputable mechanic (try eircooled site for more advice).

Get a quote for the LPG conversion as well, work out your mileage per annum, possible MPG's and costs per mile for diesel, LPG and petrol potentially and how much you'd potentially save over the lifetime you have the camper as well as any improved residual value when you sell it on.

The aircooled model will need a lot of extra work to do this conversion. The best bet is to buy a diesel scrapper and get all the watercooled bits to do the job. Best engine is the AAZ unit using the JX manifold and turbo fitted to a diesel box - yes you will have to change the box. The main issue you will have is the air flow through the radiator as the petrol front floorpan is different to a diesel one. Make sure you fit a NEW radiator or you will cook whatever engine you fit. You will need a wiring loom, gearbox, gear linkage, engine bars , fuel tank, cooling system etc to do this.

I have built quite a few T25's over the years and I know them intimately. This has been done before but be aware that there are many differences between the aircooled version and a watercooled diesel version and it is not something that can be done over a long weekend.

I suggest you sell what you have and buy a diesel ..... or be really cool and buy a T25 Syncro diesel!

There used to be a guy near Birr who converted them with a 2.0l Nissan Diesels out of a Bluebird and a variety of genuine bits. My father had one done about 20 years ago and it was a a bit of a bodge to say the least!

It was 600RZJ if it's still around.

That's what I'd expect hear from a feral child when they see an old van.
