Future Employment Opportunities After Taking Year Out

    Hi,
I'm currently going into 2nd year in TCD and was considering taking a year out in-between my 2nd and 3rd year to work in Canada.
How will future potential employers view this on my CV?
Will they view me as an unfocused, unsettled person?
I know each employer will view it differently but I am wondering what the general view on the matter is.
    Thanks.

I think year outs are very much the norm now and most employees will look on it positively.

    Pros
Shows you have the confidence to go abroad and seek a living
Setting yourself apart from competition with experience from abroad
Bringing new skills learnt from Canada
Good talking point in future interviews

    Cons
Might seem you are sick of college, can't stay committed to one thing
Hard to get back into study mode later
    No career direction

    4 v 3, I'd go tbh

Employers will take the person with a degree and a year's work experience, particularly international work experience, over the person with a 3-year degree and no experience any day.

It does depend on the degree grade as well. Companies look for a minimum 2.1 for gradations programmes so the OP should be confident he can achieve that when he comes back. I agree though a good degree and work experience you're sorted. Someone with just a degree will have to prove themselves more in the interview process

If the work is relevant to the degree, the op may even obtain a higher grade by taking a year out.

Good point, if OP has a job secured over there that is relevant to his degree he should definitely go. The only problem is most irish students going to America for a year work in chickafilla or Cicis pizza which might not be met with the same enthusiasm when he comes home
