Is there anything here that indicates there is a problem?

I contacted Vodafone about this a few weeks ago and they did phone me back and go through a few things but at the time it was working fine. Great timing. lol

Every day now disconnects and I have to reboot the modem, even though the modem is showing there is a connection.

SNR 2.9dB donstream. Thats vWeak. You'd normally want over 6.

Make sure theres no other phone kit in the house interfering.

It seems to vary at different times during the day. Phone are the same as they ahve been for the last year or so.
Will try to do a DSL Noise Margin check at different times of the day and post them.

Theyll naturally drop at peak times. You want it at 7 or 8dB during the middle of the day so come 7 or 8pm they dont drop below 6dB.

    Seems to be changing constantly..

17:00 DSL Noise Margin: Down 3.5 dB Up 8.9 dB

Just changed DSL Mode to G.DMT and getting a steady 6.0db down and 9.0db up.
    Syncing @ 8128kb/s.

    20:00 G.DMT 5.6db down and 9.0db up.

you need your line speed dropped, that SNR is never gonna be stable unless you can get it above 6dB, and thats where all your disconnects are coming from

maybe try get them to drop your speed to 7 or 8mb and see how your snr is

Currently DSL Noise Margin: Down 7.6 dB Up 8.7 dB On ASDL2+

That is the problem. Upgraded nearly a year and they tested the line and said it could handle 10mb. Was fine for a while but has been playing up a lot in the last few weeks. This makes me think it is something their end and not mine.
Will do some more tests over the week-end. Unplug all phones etc and have the modem plugged into the main socket.
Have noticed that phone line quality is not as good as it once was either.

Who would have thought that in the year 2014 there would have been a communications service as rubbish as this one, that we pay a lot for as well.

So far today up as stayed @ 7.9db and it is the down that is fluctuating from 6db to 9db.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

If your line used to handle it fine theres one of two things happening.

    A. There's a fault reducing quality intermittently, probably water ingression.
    B. Increased crosstalk from parralel lines

Wouldn't be super surprised if its the latter, especially if there's vdsl between you and the exchange.

Call em, get the phone line itself tested, make sure its perfect, and if it is get them to drop you to the 8mb package.

    Yep, will do that.
Been a constant 7.9db down and 8.6db up today.

Contact and solutions with Vodafone not going great.
These stats are coming from the main socket. No change with the phone unplugged, it's not the phone causing the problem.

    Vodafone Discussion or LACK of.

It seems that Vodafone have halved my previously stable 10mb connect to alleviate the low SNR result.

    3785832082.png

DSL Noise Margin: 9.8 dB Down 24.9 dB Up

Is normal to have as high a diifference?

    Update.

Had a phone call this afternoon.

They are sending out a new modem to see if that makes any difference. If not they will then look into checking the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,744 ✭✭✭kleefarr

Ok, new modem up and running...

    Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 6137

    Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 508

    Downstream SNR (dB) 8.8

    Upstream SNR (dB) 26.4

    No significant change there then.

Still dropping connection and changing sync and noise margins..

    Line standard ADSL2+

    Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 5114

    Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 508

    Downstream SNR (dB) 7.3

    Upstream SNR (dB) 25.5

    Downstream line attenuation (dB) 39

    Upstream line attenuation (dB) 21.2

    Downstream output power (dBmV) 0

    Upstream output power (dBmV) 12.6

    Downstream CRC 626

    Upstream CRC 0

    Downstream FEC 127755

    Upstream FEC 0

Must be time for a line check now.

Some of these pings seem very high.
Also, 16 is completely missing, could this be a problem?

Those pings are too bad, misread them.
The missing hop is strange though.

    Update.

After getting a phone call form support yesterday saying they would get the line checked, just got another phone call saying the are going to change the port at the exchange.

We'll see what difference it makes in a couple of days.

Looks like an endless routing loop, it's ping-ponging between two routers with addresses ending in .76 and .69.

A port change would sort that out wouldn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,744 ✭✭✭kleefarr

Ok, they have been out to the exchange and have not changed it over as they said there was no problem.
Engineer supposed to becoming around next few days to check internal wiring, but that has not changed in years so not sure what they will find.

I have pointed out the repeating IP addresses to them in the vodafone thread.

Also told them that a ping test to the www.vodafone.ie IP address ..

    213.233.129.155

    Results in a fail.
