Easter Island is what the rest of the world will become eventually. The downfall of that society was competition on finite resources. They built bigger and bigger statutes, which meant tearing down the forests and depleting wood/other natural resources-until there were none left. Oh yea, there was also a few wars in there somewhere that didn't help. True story!

Virgin Islands is where it's at.

They are called Rapanui, after the local name for the island.

I was there on an ecology project for 3 days in the 70s. A fascinating place.

It's planet earth in a nutshell: remote island, over exploitation of resources with a growing population and when the forests were all gone no timber to build boats to get off the island. it endes in tribal warfare and canibalism; almost like Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road'.

were there many people living there when you visited? What is it like to visit? I did a project on it years ago, and I recently read that researchers discovered that the statues were a lot taller, as over 50% was buried in the soil.
