New speed cameras?

I passed a new garda squad car today which had a black camera set up in the rear window. The garda car was parked on the shoulder off a roundabout.

Can anyone confirm if the gards now have speed cameras set up like this now?

Will they give chase if you exceed speed fo these cameras given that they are in asquad car - or just send you a fine in the post?

    Thanks
    Alan

    They'll give chase in reverse.

I think that's the cameras that read off every single number it sees and checks with database to see if car was reported stolen/untaxed etc...

    That's what I think anyway.

Automatic Number Plate Reading system. Basically looking for road tax, if the car is stolen, no licence etc.

You would be surprised how effective these cameras are ( or can be;)) - they scan traffic passing by and cars in front and behind of course.

Not sure if Garda is using them as effectively as UK Police.

Seen demo of uk camera 10 years ago
it scanned busy 3 lane motorway and linked to an on board computer.

It read all the reg numbers with accuracy of 93% compared them to database and identify tax insurace and flags against a car for drugs band driving drink driving. Stored a still photo of car that it detected something was a miss with as proof.
At end of a shift it uploaded to main database and updated on board computer.

Im sure that technology is both cheaper and more efficient now.

What I am seeing is a huge rise in fixed ANPR cameras on motorways and induction loops in the road. These would be more than capable of detecting tax nct declared off road and average speed. Used with induction loops could be used for speed. Already in use for journey times.

Just to add this system is as effective as the information uploded.
If the information is missing or of poor quality - it is useless.

If, however, all the info is up to date, including insurance details, tax status and drivers history - it might be very helpful to take uninsured / drunk/ unlicensed drivers out of the road.

If the intelligence info is added to it (drug dealing, burglaries, anti-social behaviour etc) then it is a great tool not just to policing the road but to the policing in general.

The black camera, that's rear facing, in a Garda car is an ANPR camera (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). Signals up on the system if your car is untaxed, stolen, etc.

Cars that have this will generally have a little black box on the boot, too, which assists the camera with gathering it's info. It's a good system, but should be a bit more commonplace, in my opnion. Every Garda car should have it fitted in a perfect world, I'd say.

These Anpr cameras are big in the UK. Over there the DVLA employ ordinary people to setup checks around the place, they just pull in, in a standard car, setup the camera and scan for a few hours. Fines are automatically sent out for no tax etc.

I'd imagine we will see similar here soon with the technology becoming cheaper. I also remember hearing that GoSafe vans can or will be able in the future to check for tax soon.

Probably the most untidy and unprofessional install imaginable to be honest. I'd also question the safety of such a large and heavy object unsecured from the actual body of the car, unless the boot lid has been replaced by something more solid.

How heavy do you think that lunchbox sized piece of plastic is?

I'm sure it weighs a fraction of the spoilers that are fitted to the boot lids of cars every day.

Sorry, to be clear, I'm talking about the camera on the rear parcel shelf. Its not entirely plastic. The brackets are metal, as would a large part of the camera system / power supply. Assuming its the ClearTone system from the UK, it has a reasonable bit of weight. But anything has a decent bit of force once you get it moving. Put it this way, I wouldn't want to be in an accident if that became dislodged.

Also, placing something on the boot lid for every Tom, Dick and Harry to bump against, touch and twist is just plain stupidity, even if its just the IR lamp for the system.

Thanks for the pics KKV -

I just saw the camera in behind the rear window - but it looked a little larger.
Do they always have one on the exterior and one on the interior?

Can't believe I have never heard of these.

Box on the outside might be an infrared illuminator.

Fixing it to the rear shelf? I can't see why it wouldn't be possible to have a sturdy setup that looked the same as in that photo. But yeah, not super aesthetically in that photo...

    .

It is, yes. No function other than IR.

I have no issue with it and strongly encourage it. It has a huge flaw that its updated by USB stick, so the data isn't live, but other than that the more people done for tax, NCT and insurance the better. It doesn't do speed etc but I'd certainly welcome a few vans doing tax / NCT / insurance whilst monitoring speed. No reason why it can't be implemented.

We got pulled one day by an ANPR Garda due to a drive off at a petrol station he pulled us over and informed us that we were not in White Transit Van, somebody had stole our plates a few weeks beforehand.

Indeed, its only as good as the data fed into it.

My friend got pulled on the N11 going north. She was flagged as no tax but had got it a couple of days previously.

Of course, she was sent on her way.

I think this can only be a good thing though. Get some of the skangers and crocks off the road.
