LED lighting in kitchen

I'm looking to get LED lighting in the kitchen, placed under the cupboards, to replace the requirement to use my main kitchen neon lights which I feel may use more electricity, plus they are too bright.

    Something like this:

    or
    http://www.spec-net.com.au/press/0310/images/led100310_img02.jpg

    My questions are:

    - The purpose of the lighting is to illuminate the space, rather than just add decor, would strip lighting be sufficiently bright or would I be better off getting individual bulbs? I'd rather the light is spread around rather than pointing in one direction (the first picture above is actually exactly what I need).

    - For strip lighting how do you replace burnt-out sections?

    - Could these be hooked up to the mains, or am I restricted to attaching via a plug socket in the wall? (the ones I've seen all seem to be attached via a plug socket). Obviously I'd get an electrician to wire it up if required.

    - Where is the best place to get these?

    Thanks

EDIT: actually these look pretty good: http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/70119425/
but will use up a plug socket

I put one of these in our kitchen recently they are very bright and 230v mains do no need for drives or anything.

    Robus led spot

That's a decent brand with a good warranty too. When was working for an electrical contractor over the last few summers we were constantly installing that particular fitting and they never caused any trouble. As for brightness they are very bright a few of them around the kitchen and it would be well lit up. In our kitchen I put in led strip lights and that's grand too but not as bright and them spot lights.

There not cheap cant remember exactly but I got a bit of discount of them and I think it was around 20 euro each incl vat. But as I said you'll have no trouble with them and get at least 10 year plus out of them. The same can't be said for the cheaper ebay stuff and when you get into 12v led lights then your buying led driver (transformer). Ill be home at the weekend and I'll stick up a picture of the one in our kitchen it's in a display glass front unit and does give of a lot of light.
There is literally 100s of different fitting its just one that I find good in sure there is plenty of other alternatives out there.

Remember the 230v lights have to be wired up by competent persons, also 2W seems very bright for countertop lighting.

These may fit your need for a spread light

Are the 12V about half the strength of 2W?

I guess best thing is to go into somewhere in town at lunchtime and compare brightness of 12V vs 2W.

I think spotlights as in my first post (also from IKEA for €22) might fit the bill.. only thing is I lose a plug and the wiring might not look as neat as integrated.

Robus also do a 2M set of strip leds,

they are in 4 x 500mm sections and come with a driver with a 13 Amp plug and all the connections to have 4 strips or one long strip or 2 x 1M strips etc, about €45 ex vat

most wholesalers will carry Robus, see the supplier sticky on the top of the page
