Maybe 15's or 16's would be better?

I would imagine it would look a little silly unless it was also lowered. A bit monster truck like.

16 inch factory ones would have 195/45/16 tyres
    15 would be 185/55/15

    I'd go 16

The 206 GTI had 17s from the factory.

In my own view, yes, too big, the standard ones are 14's, well they are on ours anyway. I wouldn't go above 15/16's maybe, they tend to stick out over that size, too big for the size of the car.

    I would go 15" personally...

Huge rims on a small hatchback can make it look like a giant roller skate.

Are you sure? Maybe the 180 GTI did, the standard was 16"

Yep, think the standard GTi came with a 16" wheel and the 180 came with 17"s.

You could try find a set of nimrods, they were on the 206 and 406, usually in 16 inch guise. 406 ones have a different et though

Yes my brother had one a few years ago, definitely had 17s on it.
