Going for my first lesson since I was a nipper next week, We had coaching when I was younger including a session with Jose Maria Olazabal which was great, but since my return to golf I've been reluctant to get a lesson but going to bite the bullet as I'm very interested in all the tech side to it, swing speed, spin rate etc etc I'm just afraid he's going to try make a big change. What should I be aiming to take away from a lesson? I've got down to 4 without lessons so any ideas?
    Thanks

Dar you need an idea yourself what you need out of it.
Had a lesson last week. I had an idea that the setup and alignment were wrong. Suffering from pulls and push which resulted in missing greens. Averaged 6 per round. Last Sat hit 11.
Being off 4, I'd advise you to be open to suggestion from the pro.
At your level it might be talking about improving the short game or trying to introduce a new shot shape. I'd also imagine small changes could make a big difference to you. Sometimes a trained eye looking at setup is all you need.

Thanks for the reply Ben, yeah a trained eye to see if theres any little changes i could work on would be good, I hit a fade most of the time and Im happy enough with that, I can hit a draw just not my natural shape. I never got fitted for a club either so I suppose Im looking for feedback if the shafts are right for me.

Are you going to Shane or else where for the lesson?

In terms of the lesson itself do you currently keep stats on your rounds to assist in analysing areas that need attention? You could use that as an area to focus most attention and thereafter areas where you feel yourself your loosing the most shots. What's your bad shot and then focus on drills or pre shot routine to help lessen it's impact on your round. There's so many different aspects to the game so it definitely helps to have an idea of what you want to focus on but that said you can also just get a general all over review and see what the pro recommends that needs the most work. Most good pros will identify weak areas after a few strikes.

Bear in mind that the time spent during the lesson absolutely flies so it can be worth noting a few pointers on paper before hand to help remember key questions and concerns. Also bear in mind that your game usually disintegrates for a couple of weeks after the lesson so set aside plenty of practice time to help hone the changes before any major competition. Good luck and enjoy the experience and no doubt your game will come back stronger than ever with a new found level of confidence once you've had time to practice.

That's an excellent rate for lessons, especially at that venue and with balls included.

If you are off 4, you might just require a little tightening up of technique, a small adjustment to improve something. When I went for lessons I spoke to the pro first and I stated I didn't want to change my swing to some textbook swing, just adjust to make me more consistent. I was playing off 10 at the time and all he adjusted was how I got to the ball at address and the start of the swing. Alignment really and that was it.

Guess it depends on why you're going for the lesson.......
Do you feel you've hit a wall and can't get any lower without one ? If so, then why ? What shot is holding you back ? That's what you need to work on.

I wouldn't get too hung up on spin rates, speed etc in terms of what the numbers are, obviously unless you feel something is way off. Yes, they're nice to know, and key for a clubfitting, but if the ball is going where you want it to, not so much.

Had the lesson today, went to Ryan donagher in kilcock, really really impressed with him, very laid back, the flightscope is just unreal, he suggested a swing re-route on the back swing which I was a little hesitant to do but my god the difference is mad, shanked half a dozen but the reroute felt really odd as it would but he has me coming back a lot wider and getting hands high above my shoulders, went out on the course after and I'm hitting my irons a lot further. With qualifying nearly over Im happy to sacrafice scores for the next while. Gave me a great tip, arse against a wall and swing back up without hitting it with the wall with the club.

Glad to see it went well, I noticed the short swing on your driver that day in the headfort, you were hitting it far and on target then so I'd imagine it will make the blues a little easier :)

haven't worked with Ryan directly but he worked quite closely with my old coach and found him great to talk to. He has a nice facility up in kilcock too they've done quite well in transforming the

didnt know noel fox has gone into coaching. he was a phenomenal ball striker, one of the best I've ever seen. If he can translate even half of that into anyones game, they're onto a winner

I don't see any lessons on Carton House for €30? They have 1/2 hour lesson for €50 and
    1 hour for €100.
