Just purchased a new Nikon D3300 for €404.99 in Argos.

Obviously was a pricing error as I was asked for €500+ for it. Showed the lad at the till the link and got it at the advertised price :D.

It's on the Argos website. I can't post links yet.

Sorry, I meant the Canon. The Nikon is still 404. :D

Yup, got it in argos. Had to order it for the Blanch store and price went back up the day before it was set to arrive so I did as I mentioned above and got it at the reserved price without the sales person even batting an eyelid.

I availed of this Canon 700D deal also.! Delighted. The asked us for €750 when we went to pay for it. Showed them the reservation and they honored it.!
Wonder was it a price mistake?

While the D3300 deal is a great price.

There is little point in others telling us about a Canon 700D deal that is no longer available

    Actually there is ;)

The point was that it's the same scenario. An expensive camera greatly reduced in argos and the question about argos actually honouring the price.

I'm holding out for a new Sony SLR as I have a few lenses but dang bargain alerts, why you got to do this to me !

Really not sure weather or not to get this. Have been looking at camera for a bit now. Is this a good beginner camera and is there something anyone else would recommend instead?

I picked up the D3100 for 374€ in argos a few years ago and this is a significant improvement on that. It's a great entry level dslr. I'm not a professional or anything but it you're looking for your first dslr you can't go wrong with this one. The lens kit is decent. I bought sm additional prime lens and am now looking for I've with greater zoom. I'm tempted to upgrade to this one given the price.

This or the Canon equivalent. Can't go wrong, it's all down to personal preference.

Looks like a good bargain to me, I paid almost 50% more for my D5100 a few years back.

    Hi Kenny,

What would be the Canon Equivalent Model to the Nikon D3300?

    Many thanks,

I suppose the 1200D, at roughly the same price (in Argos at least).

    On paper, it's closer to the 700D - http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-700D-vs-Nikon-D3300

This deal can be ordered thru reservations page on Argos website so doubt very much its a misprice. SLR s are generally overpriced and in compared to other electronics there must be price fixing going on between Canon and Nixon.

Just a very good price I think. £399 is lowest in UK - http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Nikon/Nikon-Digital-SLRs/Nikon-D3300-with-18-55mm-VR-lens

That maybe the case, but SLRs are also all about the lens's, and I'm guessing its just as easy to mass produce and simplify like electronics.

It is a very good deal. I literally came home from Thailand yesterday and picked up the camera for 450 euro with case and 2 SD cards in Amsterdam airport. Cant believe it dropped this low while I was away! Enjoy a great camera. If anyone can recommend a lens for long distance shots, I would be very appreciative.

argos has it at £404.99 in the uk. I sense someone pressed the wrong button in ie.

this is as good a camera as you can get for the money, so go for it or forget about it altogether

Nikon's own 55-200 is relatively cheap. It's nothing to get too excited about, but it is well built and will do the job. It was designed to work along with the 18-55 in a 'kit'.

Tripod and the right shutter settings and either a remote cable or timer would take a nice picture of the moon. Remember that you can zoom in with any graphics app for a closer view at high res.

You will not get close ups with an 18-55mm lens. There are adapters to hook an SLR up to telescopes if you really want to get in to astro photography.

Got two of these this morning in two different argos shops. Had them reserved at €404.99 and when got to the till was told it was €539. Once I told them about the price it was advertised/reserved at there was no issue and the manager put it through.

Have one reserved in Navan if any one needs it let me know.

    Excellent starter DSLR.
Got one as a gift for my parents and it is so much better than my Pentax K-x.
Make sure to have big enough sd card as 24Mpix photos are around 10MB in size.
It does 1080p videos as well.

Currys do a price promise and will match any argos price as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,815 ✭✭✭imitation

I crumbled as well and I got one too, had to show them the reservation to get the correct price though. I think im going to get a Tamron Zoom lens, probably not the most amazing quality but it should be a bit more flexible than the built in lens.

Can someone please help me with a tough decision on this

I’m not massive in photography but have a baby on the way and would like tobe able to take nice shots of the family.

I reserved one of these cameras and need to decide over the next 2 days if I’mgoing to go for it.

Are the pic's from these much superior to those taken with say a 10mp canonpocket camera?(already have a canon)

I guess what I'm asking is do I need one of these just for regular use orare they more from amateur photographers and would I appreciate the difference?

    Thanks

I was probably in a similar position. I had one of those Canon pocket slim cameras.

Then I bought a used Canon DSLR, and did a comparison between my phone, my compact camera, and the DSLR. All three have resolutions between 10m and 12 megapixels. I took a picture of the same outdoor scene, with all three.

I'd have been happy enough with the results from any of the three. However, the differences were apparent when you look closely at the pictures.

The phone produced a less clear image, and didn't handle the shaded areas as well. The compact camera was a good bit better, on all fronts. The DSLR was better again - even close up, the picture didn't look "flawed".

I'd imagine the DSLR with its bigger glass and sensor would be better for indoor snaps, where the lighting can be an issue. However, the best camera is the one you have on hand. And a slim camera fits in the pocket. Are you less likely to be taking the picture in the first place if you have to go looking for the big camera?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,060 ✭✭✭Kenny Logins

If you have no intention of using different lenses, or perhaps editing photos etc. a DSLR will probably just become a burden. A high quality compact or bridge might be a better option as you might not even see any difference at all in a standard sized print.

You'd be better off with a compact Mirrorless, that can fit in your jacket pocket or chuck it in the wife's handbag.

You should look at the Samsung NX3000 (€260) in PC World, or the Canon EOS M (€269 in Argos), both exceptional for the price.

Id recommend the NX3000 if you're going to be using it more for Still Images, I'd recommend the Canon if you're going to be taking a large amount of video too.

EOS M has a touchscreen control
NX3000 doesnt but has Wifi built in and a flip up screen (good for selfies).

Both of these will produce far better images than your 12 Mega Pixel Canon DSLR probably an EOS 1100 or 1200 D I'm guessing.

I brought a Sony A200 back in 2009, at the time I thought I was half mad because I imagined it gathering dust. It turned out that for the first while I had great fun playing around with it and learning about photography in general. Yes you can learn on a compact camera too, but in general you are limited in what you can change, and often its a royal pain to change settings.

I was blown away by the image quality, even for prints the DSLR produced far better results than any compact I had, and doing things like macro photos, playing with depth of field and long exposures all became possible.

After a while my usage did decline, but I always had the SLR handy for weddings, and as it got a bit older I was happy enough to bring it on holidays, and I have to say I was glad every time I had it, the photos are brilliant and I will be able to look through them in years to come.

It is a bit different now, the age of the potato camera phone is gone, and mirror less cameras offer almost SLR quality at the expense of versatility but without the big package. I still went for the Nikon though, because sometimes its worth bringing the SLR, and its not always an imposition, you can just dump back at the hotel on a holiday. I have a half decent camera phone, a Nikon J1 and my SLR, I still use all 3, you always have the camera phone, the J1 is light but gives good results and can be carried for the day. The SLR can be busted out when quality is needed, or you need the zoom. I don't feel any of them is a waste.

    Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the replys on the tech aspects of the camera, much appreciated :):):)

I went and bought one of these, see it as a family investment and something we will have for years to come. Also 9 year old daughter is already looking like a budding photographer based on last night :)

Had a bit of hassle getting it at the reserved price but with a bit of insistance they agreed.

Thanks to the OP for posting :):)
