Car Service - What "parts" are included

    Hi,

    Quick question, was just wondering what would generally be included in a Full Service from a Main Dealer. Would the likes of oil, screen wash, coolant, oil filter etc be included in the main price, or is that all just to cover labour.

    See attached. I know Brake pads etc would all be extra, but I had thought some of the other stuff would have been included in the service price. ( Looking from the invoice I was obviously mistaken, but just wanted to ask the question)

    The labour price is just that; the cost of their time. That bill looks expensive to me, but then again thats why I wouldnt touch a main dealer with a bargepole.

    It's worth pricing around. More than once I have gotten indys coming in at more than main dealers. Dealer servicing has come down in price an awful lot.

    Nothing is included in the service, just the labour.

    Even if you go to the cheaper places they will always say services from, specifically because oil, oil filters, air filters etc can all vary in price so wildly.

    If you are going for main dealer servicing, then these are the prices you should be getting I think?

    It looks like a full service and front pads so 250 + 115 = €365?

    I had a service from a main dealer once. 400 euros later I wowed to learn how to do it myself :D

    It seems to be a regular price for what you got OP.
    There is no "full service" item list that is valid for everyone. That's why you should ask beforehand what will be checked and fixed.

    Does the car's owner's manual define different levels or types of service, say, oil service versus an inspection service? Were there certain things that you wanted the garage to investigate that might have fallen outside the bounds of a "standard" service?

    If you're going to use a non-franchise garage for servicing, it's best to clarify what you want the garage to investigate and replace.

    "Everything else depends on what needs doing at the time." - Ties in with "condition based servicing".

    A franchise dealer or a garage that "specialises" in servicing a particular brand will (usually) know what level servicing is required given a specific mileage and previous service history. Equally, some garages (usually franchise ones) offer "maintenance checks" that are usually good value and can flag up vital areas that might need addressing now or in the near future.

    That said, and at the risk of repeating myself, when approaching a garage about servicing or repairing a car, it's best to ask for specifics and clarify details and pricing.

    €145 labour cost for a full service plus brake pads front and rear is very reasonable from a main dealer.

    The problem basically comes down to terminology. People hear "full service" and start picturing everything from an oil change to a bloody engine overhaul! My post was to outline the absolute minimum that I would expect from any level of service; oil and filters, nothing more. To me, no matter what level of servicing you are getting done, those will almost certainly be done. After that, its down to what needs doing at the time.

    I agree with you; never assume anything when getting servicing work done. Outline in advance what work needs doing based on mileage etc, and agree that any additional requirements (brake pads, shocks etc) be agreed after inspection so there are no nasty surprises at collection time.

    If garages would stop advertising "full services" for €x amount it would make life a lot easier.

    The thing that gets me about the car service is where they just lob a load of extras in without telling you in advance.

    When I go to Tesco, the checkout girl doesn say "I threw in a bottle of wine there also, it'll cost you €90".

    Agree that this is not good and could break your trust in a garage.

    In general, to prevent that from happening, it's a good idea to advise a garage that anything out of scope that arises during servicing or repair work, especially if it involves buying parts, needs to be agreed face to face or over the phone; otherwise, you won't pay for it.

    Or when they refuse to give even a ballpark figure for work. Something went in my last car (alternator I think it was) and I was getting it sorted. Guy wouldnt even give me a rough figure of what to expect, and couldnt understand when I said I cant sanction the work unless I know I have the money to pay for it. Really frustrating coversation. Ended up going elsewhere to someone who could tell me what they expected it to cost, and low and behold they were right!
