Many years ago I watched a TV programme on the Queen of England which included a segment on her Sandringham Labradors. She was shown handling her Field Trial Champion Sandringham Sydney. I was totally amazed that a dog could be trained to such a high standard and remember thinking that hopefully one day I could afford to buy a quality trained dog. Well, I got a pup but as I couldent afford to have it trained I got a book on gundog training and done it myself. She came 2nd in her first working test and since then I have trained several other dogs winning both working tests and trials with them. Why not have a go . You might surprise yourself and theres nothing as rewarding as working with a dog that you have trained yourself. Also , you will save yourself a good bit of money. Good Luck.

So true, all it takes is a good training manual/video, plenty of patience and consistency of effort, put in a half hour a day and you'll really be surprised. Gun dog breeds are natural workers all you're doing in training them is setting their discipline and teaching them how you want them to work for you. Besides that you have a great resource in boards.ie for specific queries when any challenges arise. Big money saver and far more rewarding if you do-it-yourself.

k31, what book did you use? I've got a 10 week old springer that I've bred myself. I bought her mother fully trained so want to have a go at training the pup myself. I've been training my lab bitch, the first dog I've ever trained ,since she was 12 weeks old ( 18 months now) but have made mistakes where steadiness is concerned and I know springers are a different kettle of fish altogether

I only keep Labradors myself but if memory serves me right the book I used was by the late James Douglas. As far as Springers are concerned you wont go far wrong if you can locate a copy of Gundog Training by Keith Erlandson. He forgot more about spaniel training than any of us mere mortals could learn in 100 lifetimes. Hope the training goes well.

My experience tells me that many springers (not all) do not take well to training at a young age - they're just too giddy and have attention span of about 1/4s. It just turns into a battle of minds with both dog and trainer feeling p1ssed off - it just breaks moral. I don't know how many lads I heard say that they had an untrainable spaniel, bo11ocks! I've left mine until they were min. 12 months old before doing any serious training. First exercise them for a while first to blow off some steam, then get to training. If your dogs on the giddy side let him be a pup first then get down to training.

I got a dog off peter May Drumkeen gundogs at 14 mths very well trained and lovely dog not sure what he charges as i bought the pup and training up to 14mths.

Think some of the field trial guys would be charging $80 per week

It's a pity there is no one to go to for lessons on how to train a spaniel

Most of the top gundog trainers do for about 30 per hr i think they will give you a programme and you would go back every month or so and they will asses the dogs progress

Think larry Taffe and Norman blakley definatly do

    Absolutely massive +1
The 1st time you have the dog following a command by just a whistle or a word is a brilliant feeling!
Although it gets frustrating doing this, when you see the progress, it doesn't make sense to pay someone to train your dog!!
I've brought on 3 of my own dogs.a sprocker, a springer and a lab.
Also its something you won't just forget.
So when/if you want another dog, everything's either in your head or on your bookshelf!

i have trained all my dogs some good some not great, i recently trained my gsp to a field trial standard and he is excellent by my standards,i now have a 2 month old pup which i hope to train, if hunting is not in the dogs pedigree it is not easy to make a good rough shooting dog out of him, by all means get him trained but it is more satisfying to do it yourself.
