    Hi all

My girlfriend is just after getting a 2012 golf match and I was surprised to see that it's still running on the halogen headlight setup. I thought they would have hid's in it. She has to do a lot of driving at night and I don't feel the halogen is good enough so I was thinking about ordering the gti hid headlights for it but is it just a simple swap over? Is the hid ballast in the actual headlight or will I have to get hid kit also?

No, and GTI headlights are also halogen.

You can spec xenon headlights when new but a retrofit is expensive. You'd need the headlights, levelling sensors, motors, headlight washers and larger reservoir as well as any harnesses. The bill would easily run into the thousands if you wanted to do a proper, legal retrofit.

You have two options, trade it for one with the option already installed (very rare in Ireland) or put something like osram night breakers in which will slightly improve the output. It won't be a huge difference but it will help noticeable and a set of H7s for the dipped beam should be under €30 from a motor factors.

Thanks for the advice. Which would be better? To put night breakers in or to put a hid kit into the halogen lamp?

As they're reflector headlights I'd go with night breakers.
