Sky don't offer vdsl, they can jog on

    UPC 200Mb +
    Eircom Up to 100Mb
    Vodafone up to 100Mb
    Magnet up to 100Mb
    Sky up to 24Mb

Vodafone are the best phone based operator in terms of costs and same performance as eircom and magnet.

UPC, everyone else is some form of wireless or using eircoms lines.

    1) UPC
    2) Eircom VDSL2 (Efibre) or any of the other companies using that access network Vodafone, Magnet etc.
    3) ADSL2+ providers - This includes Sky.
    4) Fixed Wireless Access providers
    5) ADSL "classic" services (up to 7.6Mbit/s) often not even advertised, you just get it if you're on an exchange that's still stuck with old technology backhaul.

If cable or VDSL2 "e-fibre" is available in your area, you'd be completely bonkers to still be on ADSL.

I'd put mobile broadband in a different category entirely as it's great when it works and awful when it's congested or has bad coverage. Overall, you can't generalise about it other than to say it's available without any wiring / infrastructure which is handy if you're on the move. I wouldn't really consider it a replacement for fixed services.

I chose Vodafone over UPC as 20Mb is killer for me.

But if you can get UPC and don't mind the slow upload then get that, they often have good deals.

Good luck to ye if you've a problem though as their customer care is beyond bad!

Agreed, even for casual users, a lot of people I know upload 200+ pictures(in their original resolution) to facebook after a night out. And think about all those HD smartphone ice bucket challenge videos uploaded on 300kbps ADSL.

UPC if you're in an urban area. In the country I'd use sky. We have it at home. Way better than smelly eircom.

I'm in an urban area and there is no UPC here.

I'm in an urban area and there is no UPC here.

Then get VDSL (efibre, Vodafone fibre etc)

There's basically no comparison with ADSL.

My experience : rock solid 75 Mbits down, 20 up and low pings.

    You'll notice a huge difference.

To be honest anything above about 50Mbits isn't all that noticeable most of the time anyway. Certainly not for streaming or browsing.

Ping times and decent upload speeds are though.

    Exactly lol!

The way I look at it is if you're getting 100Mb vs 200Mb there isn't a real difference as they're already really fast speeds.

Plus if you're on WiFi you're likely to get the same speeds regardless of whether it's 100Mb or 200Mb.

    Whereas 20Mb vs 10Mb there's a massive difference!
