Home Renovation Incentive Scheme Resistance from builder

Hello all, we are getting some building work done quiet soon. It’s going to cost in total about 50k. As far as I can see it falls directly under the provisions of the Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme. However our builder doesn't want to know anything about it. He says that he doesn’t know of any other builders who are doing it either. But he can do it but the additional costs associated with going down that route will cost more than the actual money I’ll claim back in taxes. I’m thinking that he simply doesn't like paper work. And this might mean more paper work. I believe he is fully tax compliant and fully above board.

Is it possible to ask him for a list of expenses for the job, then claim myself the items that are at 13.5%.

Does anyone know as to why the builder may not want to go through the scheme?

Tell me, is this builder insured and tax compliant, what paperwork have you seen from him?

He will have to register for the scheme. The amounts paid to him will all crop under his registration number. Revenue will have all this information.

I will leave the conclusion to yourself.

Why would there be any extra expenses involved in going down that route? Most reputable builders are glad to co-operate. Maybe you should reconsider your builder, if he takes shortcuts at this stage what kind of shortcuts will he take later on? He needs to be insured and have all the up to date paperwork, there are plenty of fully compliant builders looking for jobs.
