I have recently(3 MONTHS AGO) moved out of my parents home and am renting a room at the moment. Im currently on job seekers as i just finished a college course. I was on btea while in college. Would anyone on here have been in the same position as this and have any info on whether or not i qualify for rent allowance. What sort of proof do i need to provide etc.
    Thanks for your time.

You have to be paying rent for 6 months before making a claim.

Buy a rent book from a stationary shop and get the landlord to backdate the details to the date you started paying rent.

Thanks for the quick reply. i will do that immediately but the only problem is the owner is wary of me applying for rent allowance as he is a friend of mine who i just pay cash to.he is worried that there will be tax issues or other problems involved with this. he has no problem accepting the rent allowance though if its not a problem..

He will be assessed for tax on the income.

is it true that a house owner can earn up to 10k a year tax free from renting out a spare room

The problem you're going to have your going to need a lease and bank statements from your landlord and he will needs to be tax compliant too .
Your currently not a tenant your a licencee with next to no rights

you need to show you could afford the rent and now can't. If you were on the dole and moved there was no change in circumstances and you wouldn't be entitled to it after 6 months. You need to get on the housing list and the 6 months becomes irrelevant. Though in the past some cwo's wouldn't grant it to students who just left home after college and expecting the state to keep them.

Yes, but he still has to declare it to revenue
