I posted before about buying an '05 Avensis D4D with 5th gear not working, popping out when you tried to engage the gear. Well I bought it. I had intended replacing the 5th gear assembly, as it's handy to do without removing the gearbox. But then I got a whole gearbox cheap and fired it in with a new clutch while I was at it.
Now 5th gear is working, but the the gearstick is rocking slightly back and forward on acelleration/decelleration. i believe this is a symptom it's on the way out.
My question is, if caught early enough, can I get away with only replacing some of the 5th gear parts instead of all of them?

It's very hard to tell which art is the fault by looking at them, I usually replace the gear, hub and synchro ring

I have a fella pulling apart my old box as he has the same model and his has just started popping out. His engine mountings were knackered though, and he fitted new ones earlier today. He's Romanian, ex-Russian intelligence, and will have a good go at repairing anything. Including ECU's! He's gonna give me a shout when he has a look at it and if there's any visible wear, I'll take pics and post them up. Thanks for the advice.

    Hi,

I have a 2004 D4D Avensis, and the gear stick has always rocked on accelleration and lifting the for off the accelerator, can be quite pronounced if I have my hand on the stick!

I have put 150000 miles on it with that "feature" never causing an issue.

    Ken
