Inspired by the house queuing thread.

Do you think it entirely possible for two young people in the twenties with average jobs to save 30k in two years and live an average life and lets say they are living at home with their parents.

No replies saying me and me fiancé live on one pack of porridge and one pack of rice a week, which we get form lidil and therefore only spend 1.50 a week on food! if we are feeling really flush we treat ourselves to the basmati rice.:p

I am talking about the average sensible person.

That's 7 and half grand each a year. Of course it is, provided you don't drink and smoke.

What sort of salaries are we talking?

    Non-smokers and moderate drinkers- definitely.

    It's €144 per week each.

Now that I think of it if you don't drive or smoker and don't socialise heavily why not.

Well there seems to be surprise from some quarters that two young people working in say retail or other average paid employment could save so much for a deposit.

If they are its a good thing and shows lending for property this time has less of the deposit will come from mammy and daddy, or I will borrow the deposit form the credit union, type of carrier on, and the sort of couple who have the discipline to save like that are unlikely to get in to financial trouble in the future.

If you are living at home with your parents, no problem. That saving rate would be what you might be paying on a mortgage. Give you a taste for being f**kin skint for the foreseeable future.

They're in retail, its a merciless hire and fire in that sector. That young, maybe they have taken out 35yr mortgages to make monthly repayments appear cheaper. Wonder have they planned if one partner has kids, gets ill or loses their job. Oh and childcare as well.
