Staying in touch with friends without Facebook?

I deactivated my Facebook account a couple of weeks ago.

Facebook is so full of distractions, I no longer want to log on and waste an hour (or more) every day on it. Sadly, too many people are so dependent on it that phone calls, text messages and emails in other formats seem almost a thing of the past. Not to mention the fact that no one remembers anyone's birthday anymore.

What other ways would people suggest to keep up with friends these days without using Facebook (or other social networking sites?). Do you think it's a good idea to make regular appointments to speak on Skype (or FaceTime, or Viber)? Maybe make an email group on your Gmail account to contact regularly?

    Thoughts?

Call around for a cuppa scald and a chin wag like they did in the eighties.....

Or catch up after Sunday mass....

I was never on facebook until this summer. I hated joining up but had to, to keep in touch with people who moved away.

    First world problems.

Ring, text, email, letter, call to see them, telepathy.

Or when everyone is dancing on the crossroads on a Saturday evening.

    Cups of tea.

    Phone calls.

    Go out for lunch.

Start going for walks and that sort of shít together?

You don't have to keep in contact with them on a daily basis, like people on Facebook do. I hardly go on the thing because I'm sick of seeing all the shíte people post on it on a constant basis.

If they've gone abroad or something though Facebook is a great option.

What is the point of getting to know anyone if you can't then spy on them on facebox?

I don't have fb, deleted it nearly 2 and half years ago. The ones who matter will keep in contact with you. ;)

Snapchat. Not my favourite, but a hell of a lot better than fb.

    People had friends before Facebook.

Sometimes even talked to them too. Shocking!

A group run, something group related that everyone can enjoy.* Have your friends pencil it down once or twice a month on the same day, just send reminder emails.

*waits for someone to post group sex* :p

I was never and will never be on Facebook.
My brother and my best friend lived in oz for few years, shockingly we managed to keep in touch......

    Amazing isn't it?
Surely the only people you can't keep in touch with are 'Facebook' 'friends'???

Either that or people just hate you.....

Theres plenty of alternatives to maintaining contact with friends than facebook.

You should try the string and can or the smoke signals

I've never had a facebook account. I mainly use free webtexts to stay in touch, and I arrange to meet up regularly as well for friends I don't see everyday. Or some of my friends have free calls to my number so contact me that way.

Maybe just doing what you did before Shytebook Facebook existed might be a start.

Alternatively text your frends to tell them you like what they like

Is it not a first world problem? How serious an issue would you grade it?

OP will survive without Facebook, millions do. They even maintain friendships.

We live in a first world country so most of our problems are. We dont have to feel guilty about everything.

Like others suggested just create a whatsapp group message and problem solved.

"First world problem" it may not be but it's staggering to see this kind of ignorance. Has the OP honestly never heard of letters, phones, email, chat clients like MSN and IRC, text messaging, etc.?

Revert back to sending letters with a custom wax seal. How badass is that?

Close friends, either here or in the UK = phone/text/occasional email
FB friends, people I have met online or people I have reconnected with through FB = Facebook

The whole idea of 'keeping in touch with people who move away' is complete bull**** anyway.

    That's what skype is for.

Christ, I don't have whatsapp or skype or nathing. Do I need to be teleported back to the middle ages?

    I have a nokia as well....:o
