Rent-a-Car (UK/US)

A mate of mine is looking to rent a car, he's only just passed his test but held a provisional for a number of years (5 I think). His partner has held a licence for the last 15 years at least.

Does anyone know who will rent a car to him in the UK or US with/without the partner.

The reason I mention the provisional is that one lot I looked at for them says in Ireland X years 2 years with a full licence - so they take the provisional into account. Does anyone know if that's just if he wants to rent here or would the same policy apply in the UK.

Sorry to ask but I said I'd have a look thinking I'd check a few T&Cs and be owed a pint but I'm having absolutely no luck. Some seem to need a full licence for 10 years or more.

I have been looking at this a bit recently because I will be going to the US next year and will need a car and from what I have found Hertz doesn't require you to have a full license for 1 year. So for the US he should be fine with them but I could have missed it hidden somewhere and could also depend on which part of the country he will need it.

For the UK he will probably be out of luck.

    Hope that helps.

Depends on the rental station, different rules per state due to Insurance rules.

AFAIK its 1 year minimum, they look at the start date on the license and for a code to see which one it is (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc)

    Provisional doesn't count.

    *based on personal experience*

Everywhere is different. Most car rental companies in Europe you need to be over 25, except off the top of my head the likes of the Balearic and Canary Islands where its 18. US is 21 for Hertz but they load you on a daily basis until you are over 25. I don't believe any of them have a minimum term of holding a license.

Btw, you mention the partner, it has no bearing on a car rental. They look at each driver individually. And you have to add them individually to the rental agreement.

I had issues when in California as I had had my full licence for 10 months, didn't have a Credit Card (need 30 days notice to use a debit card) and one of my mates was under 21 so ended up having to go with a small car rental company which cost us more money but other than that it was just the same as using the bigger ones.
