Could you drill througfh a 4x4 fence post or would it split? What would be best drill bit. It is only a small piece two feet long and will be screwed to a fence which is one inch thick. Would it need a piece on the other side so the screws did not protrude?

Can you not pass a self-tapping screw through the 1" fence straight into the 4x4? Why drill a hole from the other direction?

Did not think of that. Would it hold? Can you get 4x4 or is it 4x3. If 4x3 I will need a one inch piece between the fence and the 4x3. Will the self tapping screw go through bith and hold. what length of screw
