Half watching films on telly

    Hi all

Does anyone else out there find themselves drawn to watch
bits of films and programs they've seen before on telly?

I have a massive DVD collection, Shy HD box, tons of them free DVDs papers used to give away
and a 1 Terabyte hard drive full of TV programs and films collection of films and TV programs. But somehow,
if Die Hard 4.0 or Where Eagles Dare is on, I'll tune in a watch some of it.

I do this a lot with shows like Star Trek, or even The Sopranos.

Even if I have these already somewhere in my collection, I'll still watch a bit of them on "live" telly as
opposed to a recorded "complete" version.

Does anyone know what I'm on about?

    I haven't a clue. I generally fall asleep within 20 mins into a movie

Well yeah because it doesn't take any effort, unlike dvds and stuff on your hard drive. Plus it's on tv, so you know lots of other people are watching it at the same time. That's always a plus.

Yes, it takes me ages to decide what film from my DVD collection to watch. Yet when a random film (that I have on DVD) comes on when channel hopping, I'll start to watch it :pac:

And totally forget about the movie you were originally watching, only to find it again during channel surfing (to skip ads) and find you've missed the part you wanted to originally see

Yep I do that a lot, that's why I couldn't live without TV, I need unplanned viewing. That's why Netflix and the likes is insufficient.

Had the pleasure of watching the Amazing Spider-Man 2 recently. Felt like I had watched half a movie.

I'd heard it was bad but when I watched it on my phone the other night (wasn't worth a watch on a bigger screen IMO) I couldn't believe how awful it was. I got as far as Jamie Foxx appearing as Electro for the first time and gave up. Embarrassing crap. I hope Sony give Spiderman back to Marvel after this so we can finally get a half decent movie.

Movies are in decline. Hollywood is running out of ideas. Everything has been done before.

Except a few gems most movies are just telling the same story with different actors.

Super hero shoite or precocious teenager shoite. I've given up on it all.
I'd rather watch no budget high concept TBH, but they're few and far between too. TV is where it's at, isn't it?

You should give a film called "Resolution" a shot if you're looking for something low budget but with an original, interesting plot and excellent acting. It's a Horror/Psychological type movie but done really well.

The Lord of the Rings was a great film for this. I often threw it on from a DVD when I came home from the pub. What made it so great was you could nod off for a 30 minute nap and when you woke up you wouldn't have missed anything.

This is part of the problem. As long as Transformers et al continue to make a zillion dollars, the studios will continue to churn them out. TV is notionally less tied to dollar return. The scripts have more freedom and often better actors. Game of Thrones, as an example, is probably the most expensive tv program out there to make and can still produce 10 hrs of fairly high quality viewing. There are good movies out there but not many mainstream ones.

I would agree the quality and range of tv programs is exceptional. I'm loving the Scandanavian crime series at the moment; years behind everyone else obviously.

There's loads of great cinema being made, and loads of great cinema from the past to watch. There really is no paucity of films to watch if you're willing to go outside what's shown on TV.

My main problem is the lack of decent cinemas. Sure, I was happy to go see Guardians of the Galaxy in a big cinema, and I thought it was a silly and fun film. However there's nowhere to see The Rover outside of Dublin's IFI. And if it does come to Cork it'll be in a place that was never designed as a cinema theatre and is just plain uncomfortable.

Half watching?! I'll have you know I'm fecking glued to Police Academy Something on itv4 right now. It's at the part where the new police recruits from the academy, along with some familiar faces, are engaging in some hilarious but misguided hijinks.

All the time. I've seen Shawshank Redemption, Die Hard, Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction about 10 times because of this.
However if I go on to Netflix or through my hard drive it takes me over an hour to decide to watch something new.
