Both indicators on my wife's BMW 118d (2008) are flashing at double speed like years ago when a bulb had blown.

All bulbs are lighting and the dash is showing a bulb as a warning.

    Any ideas appriciated.

The high side drivers are telling the lighting module there's a bulb fault. If you get the codes read I'd imagine it will read the same fault. The software in the ecu is flashing the indicators at double speed.

Check all bulbs & connections and make sure the bulbs are the correct wattage.

If all bulbs are correct I'd imagine it's a fault with the high side driver in the lighting control module. I'd imagine these are the same as in the e90 which I'm more familiar with.

Thanks, the fault appears to be intermittent, the indicators were working ok for a while today. All the bulbs are the original bulbs so the wattage should be fine.

Is this the part that could be faulty.

I assume theses are the same as the e90, on the e90 the LCM is in the panel beside the drivers right leg. These needed to be coded to the vehicle, so need to be wiped if second hand, then recoded.

Most driver chips do diags when the bulbs are off and when they are on. I wouldn't rule out a bad wiring connection, defo worth verifying all connections are good, before replacing LCM.

Thanks for all the advice. I will check the connections next dry evening. The part looks the same it is basically the headlight switch. Many thanks.

I was looking at diagnostic kits on eBay mainly from china and the connect the car to a laptop via a USB to diagnostic port. Will these recode and is there any sw I need to buy.

Sorry to be a pain but I am new to all this.

What kit did you buy off ebay? Inpa?

I'm not sure if your can needs diagnostics over CAN a 2008 e90 would need diags over CAN and nit k-line like the older ones.

You'll need someone with some BMW diags kit to recode a new ecu for you, bmwstuff here might be able to sort you out if your around Dublin.

It would be worth taking out the LCM and looking at the solder on the high side drivers, if you have access to a micro scope look at the pins. You might just need to reflow the pins on it.

Great thanks for that, good advice on the solder, particularly as it appears intermittent.

This was the tool I was looking at, or similar. Came accross it on another BMW forum. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/ECU-EEPROM-Scanner-1-4-0-v-Never-Locking-Diagnostic-OBD2-Code-Scan-Tool-for-BMW-/161344291561?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2590de82e9

Looks to cheap to be any good.

That's an obd2 scanner, so will read basic codes from the engine ecu, but probably won't read any of the body controller stuff, in fact they are probably on a different bus.

The LCM is in a plastic case that just pops open, get it under a microscope and examine all the solder joints. If you see any bad ones you can reflow them with a heat gun, but you have to be careful with the heat.
