They just flew over my house in Beaumont, heading south, I heard them and ran to my window, couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them, and thought they were R.A.F. from the glimpse I caught.

    :D

I was enjoying lookin at them circling then they went out view, their was almost no sound off them so I thought maybe they have nice quiet engines for... stealth purposes. then BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

I feel quite small and humble now.

I thought a plane was crashing into the house - crouched down on the floor in fright - absolutely terrifying sound!

And that wasn't even as loud as they can be.

The noise and vibrations are part of the attraction they hold for some of us.

Ive been 10 miles from a Space Shuttle takeoff and the ground shook beneath me.
Last year I was 200 metres from a Harrier hovering.....my legs were vibrating like jelly in a bowl.
I've been #1 for takeoff after Concorde in Heathrow....our whole A321 shook with the power of those engines.

Yes it was a bit frightening for a few moments when you didn't know what it was. Imagine what the 'real thing' must be like in real war zones.

They look like sparrows on the wingtips and sidewinders on the pylon beside the fuel tanks.
    Or they could be dummies??

I was working just down from Croker and they flew straight over us at full throttle...
I swear, the noise was earth shattering, unbelievable sight and sound.

They usually fly with dummy AMRAAM missiles on the wingtips at all times as it improves drag and wing flutter despite carrying some extra weight.

Croke park residents will now be petitioning for no more than 3 F-16 fly-bys per calendar year :D

Jokes aside that was f*ckin class. I can see why our 'murican neighbors are so gung ho! :D

We should start another petition for at least 3 F-16 fly-bys per calendar year :D

You would not even hear or see them in a war scenario. They would be flying at a high altitude

Typical , the greatest aviation event in the country in over a year , and the Dubs get it for free and dont even tell the rest of us about it .

I would have gotten the train from Galway had I been informed .

At least when we had the Salthill Airshow it was well advertised , bet our fighter jets were louder than yours .

There was plenty of low flying F-16's over Gaza the last few weeks according to people's reports on Twitter anyway.

After watching that youtube video in Lusk - I had no idea how to visualise just how fast those planes were! The suburban semi-d's really puts it in perspective.

They attack at various altitudes including low level strafing runs with plenty of noise. It's often too late when they are heard. Video from the other thread:

    Also various attack exercises:

More if you Google 'f16 bombing run' for videos.

Used to work in a tiwn near perpignagn in france and regularly had fighters fly past. The noise was insane but always welcomed the sight. Incredible things to see

If you had been reading this forum last week, you would have got a heads up that an F-16 flypast was on the cards for today (I can't seem to find it now).

They flew over me in Ranelagh but I couldn't get outside in time to seem damn it :mad::mad: Fantastic roar !! :D

The only problem is all dummy or practice ordnance is marked with the colour blue to make sure it never gets mixed up with the real thing and none of the missiles carried by either F-16 had any blue markings.....

Judging by the online uproar the Dubs didn't know about it either.
And a train from Galway may not have been worth it for the 2-3 mins max you might have seen them.

The Dublin Airport spotters only put the info up yesterday. Looks like Boards.ie was well ahead of the rest this time.

Looking at one pic on flickr you can see that both aircraft have what looks like an AIM-120 AMRAAM on their the wingtip pylons.
In addition the outermost left pylon on each aircraft is loaded. Looks like an Aim-9 on the lead aircraft, more slender munition on the #2.
Would I be right in thinking that the belly pod is an ECM pod?
Under the cockpit we see the Link 16 gear on the left.
What is on the right hand side? Target designator?

    AMRAAM and Sidewinder equipped F-18:

    Blue inert/training round:

    Wiki image of Sidewinder variants:

Personally I doubt they would carry live rounds when the application clearly stated 'no munitions'

    Has to be one of the best sounds ever.Reminds me of ;
    Saab Draken display-Baldonnel in 93'
    Typhoon at Salthill in 2007
Dutch F 16 burning off fuel by way of a display over Baldonnel before he landed in 1997(for 75th IAC Anniversary Airshow)

    Magic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,561 ✭✭✭andy_g

Display loading is inert rounds however display loads will not always be painted blue but will carry inert markings/display loading on the sides.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 uchgdave

yea 2007 was one of the best years we ever had in salthill.

From our crows nest position we saw it comming from behind , caught everyone out .

Those were the Golden days of aviation for me anyway , afraid its been all downhill from that point on .
